"White Noise"?

Amazon has a white noise machine on sale. I could never see the point. I don't like "noise." I don't care if it's waves, birds, or artillery fire. I want to hear what's necessary, not noise for the sake of noise. These devices are supposed to help people relax and go to sleep. They would do the opposite for me. I prefer quiet. In the summer, my neighbors seem to take turns mowing their lawns. As soon as one finishes, another will start. Maybe I should record that sound and sell it.

The white noise is supposed to help people with tinnitus.

White noise also helps people with attention deficit disorder.

I only use the white noise to test audio system for frequency response flatness. Wouldn't want to listen to it though. But you can generate a wave file or mp3 file with white noise using something like Audacity then play it on your PX, Laptop or Phone.

Often pink noise (equal energy per octave) is used for audio testing rather than white noise (equal energy per frequency) since it produces a flat response with an octave based equalizer or analyzer.

Pink noise represent the kind of energy normally in music or sound we normally hear that is significantly less energy in the high frequency than the low. But white noise is use to adjust audio system to ensure they produce all frequency in the hearing range equally well.

Not sure how you test, but personally, I never use white noise in the design of amplifiers or loudspeakers. If you use an FFT or real time analyzer, which typically uses a logarithmic horizontal frequency scale, a pink noise source provides a straight line response (assuming the DUT is linear from a frequency perspective). If you were to use a white noise source, you’d get a rising amplitude/octave trace which would be more difficult to interpret. For amps, I usually use a swept sine wave (for frequency response), a fast Dirac pulse for transient response, and a square wave (which is actually an extremely useful stimulus for adjusting negative feedback). For loudspeakers, I use pink noise or a Dirac pulse. The downside of pink or swept noise is that when you look at the FFT, the response is affected by the room reflections, while with a Dirac pulse, you can acquire the initial pulse and FFT it for frequency response without the effects of the room.

I have tinnitus and think of it as my constant white noise.

I have severe tinnitus and moderate attention disorder. I want quiet solitude. White noise is worse than grinding teeth, it really sets me on edge.

White noise generators were constantly running in the State office where I worked. Once in a while, maintenance would shut them down for some reason. When they did, total silence would ensue and pretty much everyone in the office would stop, breath sigh of relief and just sort of relax in our chairs as we enjoyed the temporary silence. I always thought that spoke volumes about white noise.

One of the reasons I moved off of the beach years ago...had enough of the 'white noise'....24/7.

It's a meditation/relaxation technique...as a candle is while awake. It's a 'dark candle'.

If you need help sleeping or with tinnitus...it works...according to the Mayo Clinic.

I just let the mind's eye out...only takes 30 seconds to get going...watch the colors...watch the images flow in and out...and then poof...zzzz

Jerry, BigDaddy is correct. White noise helps us that have tinnitus get some moments of peace. I have the constant sensation of radio static as though it is off-channel. The only way I can get some sleep is to have a competing source of sound so I sleep with a loud fan running. There is no cure for tinnitus, so we must learn to live with it.
