This is a great thread for all who love and use their DSLRs and DSLR lenses. Use them and be happy until they cant be fixed anymore and there are no longer parts for them. Sadly that is happening already for some older DSLR models that repair shops can no longer get parts for.

Some of my pro DSLR user friends are already finding it hard to get parts to repair some of their older DSLR pro models. As some DSLR models are being discontinued, repair shops and makers are no longer stocking parts for all these models. Just the new reality.

No one needs to spend money for better, newer gear if you are happy with your present gear. The used gear hand-down also works for mirrorless gear as folks upgrade and sell or trade-in older mirrorless models. That works for everyone.

I personally have used SLRs and DSLRs and many dozens of their lenses since 1968. In 2017 I made the move to mirrorless gear and have never regretted it for all the distinct performance advantages of mirrorless that no DSLR will ever be able to match.

But that doesn't mean your needs are the same as mine. And as a working pro, your photo budget may be very different than mine also. As a longtime pro ,any performance advantages do matter to me in a highly competitive profession. That is the main reason I made the move to mirrorless.

The top News Services around the world, Associated Press, UK Press, Canadian Press, all Gannett media including USA Today and AFP (Agence France Presse) have ALL moved away from their DSLRs and moved to fullframe mirrorless gear for all their staff photographers and staff videographer, worldwide, in the past 24 months. So you can thank them also for moving to mirrorless and putting their used DSLR gear on the market.

Most folks here in UHH dont have similar needs and their current DSLRs are all they need, and that is perfectly fine. I will continue to use my mirrorless gear in good health, and I wish the same for all DSLR users. I accept your thanks for my move to mirrorless.

This should never be about either one or the other being the ONLY right choice for every photographer. There is plenty of room for all of us, no matter what format or type of gear we prefer to own and use.

Cheers and best to you all.

Please do not tell my wife. What she doesn’t know won’t hurt her and the idea of 45 megapixels is very appealing.

That’s clever. I almost answered with a “not that I’m aware of” until the lightbulb went on.

Not so really. I have been working with fullframe DSLR cameras and fullframe lenses as a photojournalist on assignments around the world for decades. When I moved over to fullframe mirrorless Sony bodies and fullframe E-mount lenses, the total weight of my similar kit was reduced significantly. Everything also fits in smaller bags and camera cases, and weighs significantly less when I weigh it for travel.

And my back and neck can also testify to the reduction in weight since I moved to fullframe Sony mirrorless and fullframe mirrorless E-mount lenses from my big fullframe Nikon and Canon pro DSLRs and their pro fullframe lenses, and I currently have 13 fullframe mirrorless E-mount lenses covering from 10mm to 600mm, plus 1.4X and 2X TCs. .

Cheers and best to you.

I have a Nikon d7200 and a d850 and like a few others picked up some really good glass for both fairly cheap but also other things like a power pack and a better tripod and how about a tripod for the 850 that fits on the side window of my car for the bad days when it hurts to move. Good stuff. I want to thank all of you for taking care of your GAS attack and hope you enjoy many more.

BTW really great thread - a nice fun one for a great change

The size of the files is a little of a downside but updating or getting a new computer is something I need to do anyway. I have been limited to 16 gig of ram and a processor that is too slow to run some programs efficiently. I have held off buying Topaz for that reason. That will be the next expense of any significant amount.

Maybe one day I'll go mirrorless if I get bad GAS, live long enough, or some unforeseeable event causes me to. I know it's the future but I have really gotten some good deals on some great gear in the last few months and for that I've got to say thanks to some of you who have gone mirrorless. I made the move to full frame with a used D850, bought used Nikkor lenses: 14-24mm, 24-70mm, 70-200mm, all f2.8s, and a Nikkor 200-500mm. Camera and lenses all in excellent to like new condition and US models as well. The lens at about 1/2 price of new or even less.
Maybe I'll switch to mirrorless when the next big development takes place but for now I'm happy and believe I will be for the foreseeable future. I hope it doesn't get to the point Tums doesn't work anymore.
Maybe one day I'll go mirrorless if I get bad GAS,... (show quote)

Excellent choices all around!! You will love them. Including the 200~500!! Best kept secret in Nikon's Line up! They should charge twice as much for it...but don't tell them that!!

I paid 575 bucks for the 200-500 and it doesn't have a spot on it! The guy was asking for 575 and I did not bicker with him. I already had the Tamron 150-600 G2 but the 200-500 is a better lens in my opinion. He has the Z6 or Z6II, I can't remember which, and wasn't satisfied with the lens and adapter setup.

This image taken with a Canon R5 and Sigma 150-600mm (1/790sec, f/6.44, 468mm) started out as a 47mb CR3 RAW file. The resulting jpeg (attached) with no post processing is 12mb. The cropped jpeg (also attached) with minimal post from the RAW file is 4.4mb.

I do not understand the rush to buy mirrorless. My plan is to continue to use my Nikon D7200 and D7100 with Nikkor lenses until they fall apart.
But as it is more than likely that I will fall apart before they do, my kids will inherit the Nikons and continue
to use them for years to come.
The money saved by not going mirrorless will go for travel to exotic lands with great photo opportunities.

No rush it is just that in the last 3 years mirrorless has gone from marginal especially as far as AF to running circles around DSLRs in all aspects of capabilities.
Many people wanted to do some creative work or actually get the shot that with a DSLR was hit or miss.
Prior to 3 years ago there was no reason to change. But 3 years going is not a rush.
