Here's a Trumpet player I want to share with Mark

Here is a link to an album by Bobby Hackett, my all-time favorite trumpet player that I thought Mark and other music lovers would enjoy. There are many phenomenal players out there that I really enjoy, but Bobby Hackett is right there at the top! The best Christmas present my wife ever gave me was a CD set of Bobby Hackett's Capitol Years.

Enjoy!!

I played the trumpet when I was a kid, but I think he sounds better.

Thank you very much!! His records were some of the first ones I "played along with" as I learned to play "jazz". He also played cornet, my first instrument.

Fine trumpet sound. My introduction to his playing was as featured trumpet on some of the Jackie Gleason recordings.

Bobby Hackett was one of the best. I later learned that he grew up a block away from me. Just another kid from Queens!

Yes he is good and yes there are lots of good ones over time but when it comes to absolute mastering of the trumpet Rafael Mendez is in a class that no one else can compete. He is the only one that mastered the art of breathing and playing at the same time creating "moto perpetual" (a continuous sound of thousands of notes over three minutes) which once heard will convince anyone that he is the best that has ever been and has not been repeated. From Mexico he played in the King's band at 5 years old, played for many Hollywood movies, had twin sons that played (their trios were amazing) his "fight of the bumble bee" is unmatchable. I attended a clinic he gave in 1960 that was an event I shall never forget. When considering those that have mastered a musical instrument I would list him with anyone.

I think you misunderstood the post. It was about Bobby Hackett, a jazz trumpet player. I first became aware of Raphael Mendez when I was 10 yrs old. (47’) I had a 78 record of him playing Flight of the Bumblebee and on the flip side“ Carnival of Venice. He was an amazing concert trumpet player. Try listening to Allison Balsom. She’s incredible.

You are correct, Mark. I was speaking about Bobby as a jazz trumpeter. And Alison Balsom is truly amazing, and not just as a classical concert trumpeter. Here is a link to her playing Autumn Leaves (Les Fuilles Mortes) on flugelhorn. Such a beautiful sound. Rich and dark. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSVWJIF7b6U

There are too many amazing musicians out there to argue over who is "best". Music should bring us together! I loved Rafael Mendez too. He was a real inspiration to me, also. Today, my top 3 inspirations still living and playing trumpet are Tine Ting Helseth, Alison Balsom, and Andrea Giuffredi. All three have many, many videos on YouTube, so their music is easy to find.
