I too own a SB-900 and use Energizer Ultimate Lithium batteries. They are more reliable in cold weather, such as Montana, and are guaranteed not to leak. They cost more than standard batteries but still less expensive than having to replace a Speedlight.

Funny you should say that energizers batteries are more reliable I’ve have always used Duracell and never had a problem. But back in December I needed batteries in a hurry and stopped by the dollar general and all that had was energizer so I bought them instead. I have left Duracell batteries in my flash and never have they leake. And they good till date on the energizer batteries was June 24 maybe I just got a bad pack of batteries. But they was not ultimate lithium batteries.

Any battery can leak. It’s never a good idea to leave batteries in an electronics device of any kind, for extended storage.

I definitely leaned my lesson. And I guess I’ve been lucky because I have left the batteries in my flash up to six months before using the flash again. But they have always been Duracell batteries.

Is it possible to get a copy of that manual? I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you in advance.

👍
Sorry about the leaky battery.

But maybe it’s a good excuse to buy the Newer unit?

One thing to be mindful of is some of the “economical” speed lights don’t have good color stability over time. So you might want to check the specifications and reviews for that.

I could be wrong Bill but I was told you have to use the flash a few clicks a month to keep them working. What is your thoughts?

I always used the flash at least once a month to form the capacitors. I would leave it fully charged when I was done flashing about 5 or 6 times. Then I took the batteries out.

........................To resolve this, you can clean the power switch contacts the same way you cleaned the battery contacts. But before you start cleaning, make sure your Nikon SB-900 isn't attached to a power source.

The very first thing to do prior to dismantling is to 'Discharge the Capacitor' at the points provided.

Would that be the nano flux capacitor that needs monthly forming?

I found that Energizer batteries were much less prone to leaking than Duracell.

I requested that you send me a link to the repair manual for the SWB900 and haven't received an answer from you?

I have a Nikon SB-900 and I forgot to remove the batteries back in December when I last used it. I wanted to use it a couple of day a go and it would not turn on. Looked at the batteries and they was corroded. I took a q tip whit vinegar and baking soda and cleaned the contacts and it started working again. Everything works and all is good except one thing it will not turn off. The switch works master remote on all work but when I turn it to off it will not power down. Any suggestions?

Get an SB-910; and don't leave the batteries in it.

Thank you, I hope I never need to use it, but I’d rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it!
