When you get very tiny and are using long bellows extensions and powerful magnification, many subjects have fascinating shapes but not much colour. Using Kokin PolarColor Filters, or two polarising fliters with a dichroic crystal like selenite between them, can add colour to even the most colourless transparent bug. For instance a water flea (Daphnia) or fish scales or rock samples. Even bits of plastic are colourful like this image of the edge a Nikon plastic filter case.

Some of these would be great for the "What is it?" topic!!
Photo-Microscopy is a fascinating subject. One or two of our macro-photographers dabble with the microscope.
Please post a photo or two of your set-up.
Hi, I generally use a 70-180/4.5-5.6D AFED Micro-Nikkor for photography at 1:1, Then I use a pair of Nikon PB6 bellows with an 80mm El-Nikon enlarging lens instead of a macro, or a 50mm standard lens in reverse. Then I use the microscope.. A Watson Service E25 seen below. Though often I stay with the bellows because of the non-existant depth of field under the microscope. Most crystals and plankton etc are best at about ten times magnification. I use a polariser over the light source and another over the lens to get the crossed polar effect to bring out the diffraction colours. A dichroic filter made from selenite or a Kokin PolarColor filter goes just underneath the subject.

Okay... Guess what this is...

You already labeled it!
Thank you for the set-up image.
Very interesting pics. Not something anyone of us would probably see. Thank you for posting!
Well I always put this on screen whenever I give a public picture show and nobody has yet come close. So in order to reduce stress I thought I'd better not keep you in suspense and worry. Some of the pics I make at out of this world. For instance below is a piece of Venus Flower Basket deep sea sponge. I once made a movie of this using varing focus to give the appearance of flying through a bridge-like structure. The holes are only a couple of millimetres across.
And there's some more pretty crystals for you.

Andy, you have WAY too much spare time, and make great use of it. Fascinating shots!
Awesome mind bending share.
Thank you.
These are fantastic! I have really enjoyed these
Here's some more polarised plastic, for you.
It's so easy to do this... all you need is two polarising filters.
This is a great party trick to show the children over Christmas. Just hold one filter in front of your eye and one over the light source.
Happy Christmas

And if you twist them, new stress patterns will colorize in the clear plastic.
