I'm just getting started with GIMP v2.10. Can I use it to focus stack JPGs? Or do I need another program after I do initial post-processing in GIMP?
I haven't used GIMP in a long time but I don't think it will stack your images.
Gimp has amchat room you can go to to get fast answers. You'd have to look it up, but I think it's on freenode.net. That's where the developers hang out.
Gimp does not support automated features that are useful for focus stacking. You can stack with it as shown above, but it does not align and re-size the images (different pictures to be stacked together commonly have slight differences in size, and are commonly not quite aligned -- especially if you are taking pictures by moving the camera rather than by rotating the focus ring). Manual stacking in Gimp can be pretty labor intensive.
There is stacking software that is not too expensive (Zerene Stacker and Helicon Focus), and there is free stacking software. I use Zerene. Helicon is very similar. I have no opinion on the free software though no harm in trying. But stacking software will re-size precisely, and it will do a better job than humans can at aligning them. It then merges the pictures together for you while you sip your coffee.
