Do any of you have this camera? What are your thoughts regarding its black and white quality? Thanks for comments.

Never thought about it, so I just tried two images. Very favorably impressed. Great menu options if you start with an existing raw file and then convert it in playback. (Acoarst you could do the same thing on your PC.)

There are three initial menu choices for monochrome, plus the usual tweaks. I did find that maxing out the sharpness slider seems mandatory, to enhance textures in the image. Otherwise just tweak to taste.

Very flexible system. Thanks very much for piquing my curiosity.

Never realized that you can convert a RAW file to B/W in playback. Then I tried it. I think doing it on computer is more flexible and gives better end result.

I have a GX8 that is from the same family, but predates the G9 by a couple years. I get very good B&W results recording RAW and using Lightroom Classic or my old version of NIK Silver Effects to do the processing.

I thought the OP was asking what quality the camera itself produces. But maybe it was meant to include post, so maybe the OP will expound a bit on that ...

There are such devices as dedicated BW digital cameras. And what advantage might they have? They don’t need the color filter layers over the sensor.

If you want to know more about dedicated BW (monochrome) cameras then I recommend starting with the following article (use your favorite search engine to find it):
“Are Black and White-Only Digital Cameras Crazy In This Day and Age?“

I have used the G9 for several years now. I shoot both color and in black and white. The G9 evf can be set to see in monochrome when shooting in black and white. This camera has several options for monochrome shooting: 1-shoot in color and in post processing make it into a b&w 2-Use the jpeg setting for black and white, 3-set the settings to shoot in L monochrome (preferred). As you can see, it is quite easy for the G9 to do black and white. You can even use in camera color filters such as yellow, red, green, blue, etc. I think you would find this camera to your liking.

The G9 is excellent, but a bit dated, introduced in December of 2017. It is way overdue for refresh or replacement. If you are considering buying one, now, I'd look for a used one in decent condition. New bodies are $1300, while very nice used bodies cost $650 to $780 depending on condition, with six month warranties, from MPB or KEH.

As for B&W, I'd save raw files and JPEG files with the camera in a B&W mode so you can see B&W in the finder. The raw color file can be post-processed to monochrome using any combination of color channels you like, in any intensity, for whatever effect you like.

I have had mine for 3 years, really like it and the B&W quality has been very acceptable on the JPEGs, although I think converting RAW files to B&W in post, as others have noted, offers more flexibility and sometimes better quality when I'm done. I was surprised at the price; got mine for $999 and thought it was routinely discounted to around that price until I looked today. The used price is pretty attractive. I suspect that Panasonic and Olympus are both likely to generally go for higher priced offerings in the future as they aim at the high end amateur/professional crowd. Lots of good M43 lenses available, too, and if you haven't used a Lumix before I think you will find the menu system refreshingly straightforward (at least I did, your mileage may differ).
