Interesting post and a cool shot. Stick Ball must have been an "East of the Rockies" sport. I grew up in central California in the 40s and 50s and never heard of Stick Ball

Well, it was definitely a New York City thing. I don’t know about the rest of the East. All you needed was a broom stick, a cheap pink, rubber ball called a “Spaldeen” (made by Spalding), and some chalk to draw a box on the wall for a strike zone. Another version was played in the street with manhole covers and car fenders serving as bases and the ball pitched on one bounce. We’d play all day…fun times.

Nice post that jogs the memory… Yep, we played stickball , or half-ball with a pimple ball sliced in two and broomsticks cut down for bats. The half-ball could dance in some awesome curves. I grew up in the Philadelphia suburbs like Longshadow, so we played the same take on stickball.

Thanks for the memories…

Kids in my area played actual softball, or were in Little League. We did play line games, like Red Rover, though, and Crack the Whip.

Growing up in the Springfield Gardens section stickball was a daily occurrence. Stoop ball was for variety. We too we’re out all day long only going home for lunch and when mother called us home for dinner. It was a different and safe world for kids back then.

You have to feel sorry for the kids today who never got to play stick ball.
A cheap Spalding ball and a broom stick is all that you needed.

I don't have a cell phone, have no use for one. I am live fine without one.
