Help and advice needed

Don't know if this is in the right section, please change if needed. I have been given a half dozen drawings done by my Father at least 65+ years ago, some pen and ink, some watercolour, example attached. I have been asked to try and restore them. Most have some damage due to being stuck with Sellotape, which has left some residue and brown marks on them. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to remove the residue and a software program to remove them digitally if needed. TIA.

I can't help with advice, but very cool drawing. Your Dad was an artist!

To remove the tape residue smear a light coating of mayonnaise on the residue and don't remove it for 24 hours. I would try this in a corner first, just to be sure it does the job without harming the paper.

Contact the library of a local college in your area. They may have a restoration "expert" on staff; or, can refer you to same.

That is the best advice.

The gentleman that did those drawings showed some real talent for caricatures/cartoons. I love the expressive action he drew in that group on the left!

google, "manuscript restoration" and get to reading. Here is one example from that search

The mayo probably would work but use the mayo to make a sandwich; you've gotten much better advice.

Thank you SO much for posting these - I absolutely LOVE your Dad's work. I laughed and laughed - I especially like the train image ( since I have a "thing" for trains- especially steam) and the guy getting blown into the air by the steam. There is so much to look at in these that I will have to keep coming back to see what else I can spot. When they say "every picture tells a story" - each one of these is almost a novel. He had an amazing talent. If I had inherited these I would hang them up in a frame - even without getting them "fixed"
Thanks again - have a great day

My pleasure, my brother will also be delighted that you love them as much as we do! God bless.

God Bless you also - ( and brother Richard or Geraint)

I am somewhat surprised that you have not had any offers to make post processing adjustments for you - usually the folks who know all about processing are ready to jump in. Maybe you could post these again in a different forum.

And on rethinking this, I actually think the tape marks give it an extra flavor of authentic age. I'm not sure I would want to have anyone mess with the original - adjustments to copies - OK

Your dad was a genius. I would contact the BEST Manuscript Restorer and spend the money needed to make these like new. What a find. Each one should be matted and framed so they can be enjoyed by all who visit your home or office. Good luck with your quest.
