I'd recommend taking the boat ride on the canal even if you don't like boat-rides. It's calm and you get points of view that you won't if you just walk along the canals. Also, if you're interested, there's small Michelangelo statue in the Church of Our Lady. All in all, you're into a real treat going to Bruges.

If you are up for (and want to take the time for) a 2 hour drive, go to the Henri-Chapelle American cemetery. There are almost 8000 graves of American soldiers who were killed during WWII. It is very moving.

Good morning. My wife and I are going to Amsterdam, Bruges, and Ghent. We've been to Amsterdam before and briefly went to Bruges. Never to Ghent.Have any of you been to Bruges and Ghent? We will be in Bruges/Ghent for 4 days. I'm looking for places , off the beaten path, to photograph. If you have any suggestions of unique places to photograph I would appreciate it. We're going to see the Vermeer exhibit at the end of April and making a side trip to Bruges. We will have a car so getting to places will not be a problem.Thank you in advance.

If you'll be in the area in the April/May time frame and if you haven't been, then Keukenhof Gardens in Lisse is highly recommended since its open only for two months of the year (April & May)...Its a couple three hours north of Bruges.

Huisbrouwerij De Halve Maan brewery has an excellent short walking tour of one of the original breweries in Bruges. Its not far (5 minutes) from the Church of Our Lady Bruges which houses the Madonna (mentioned in an earlier post) and the only one Michaelangelo authorized out of Italy, a must see. And as also mentioned earlier, a canal tour is a nice excursion. Enjoy, Bruges is a beautiful city, touristy at times but still enjoyable....Cheers

Check out the tour books by Rick Steves. They are on his website or bookstores. My wife and I went to Bruges and Ghent (and other cities) last year. Great great books.

THANK YOU

Walk to the top of the Belfry of Bruges for great views. Other than that, everything is photogenic. As mentioned, Rick Steves always provides good advice.

Before you go, I heartily recommend seeing the film "In Bruges," with Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson.
Funny as hell; but, has wonderful "shots" of Bruges.

Pay no attention to the "blood!" <smile>

I was just in Ghent to see the Ghent Altarpiece by Jan van Eyck. The church is fantastic. There is a castle in the middle of town that is also really neat (don't bother with the audio tour, it have very little historical information). I just saw the Vermeer show last week - outstanding! I hope you have your tickets already. The "Girl with the Pearl Earring" will be back in the Mauritshus by then in De Hague. I wanted to see her with the rest of the paintings. Good luck to you.

I lived in Mons for five years and used to travel from Mons or SHAPE to NATO (Brussels) frequently. When you do that you will notice that the light looks totally different and is what was captured by the Dutch artists you might look at the way the light falls on the forests and the fog on the canals. Absolutely breathtaking pictures can be made.

Just a thought - Everyone here has great ideas...but why not just go out on your own and discover your own hidden places. The tough thing about guide books and getting recommendations is that everyone had read them. Yes they have their place but finding your own hidden places is so much more satisfying...but hey this is just my 2 cents...enjoy your trip.;-)
