September 2, 2017, at the Portland (Oregon) Art Museum. This was the only Van Gogh in the room. I took 12-15 pictures with my Sony RX10m3, no flash. No interference by the guard who was in the same room; Maybe because it was not an interchangeable lens camera? And I had it on electronic shutter (Silent Running).

Generally interchangeable lens has nothing to do with it. The issue is the flash. I take photos of artwork in museums all over the world with my Canon 7D Mark II and a fast 35 mm f2 lens with no issues as long as I don't use my flash. Many museums around the world that get a huge influx of tourists don't allow photography of any kind for a number of reasons, but I've had no problems in most places.

Wow. Just wow . Seeing anreal Van Gogh!! I have a pic of one that came to NW ARKANSAS Crystal Bridges museum. They only had one as well. I lose my breath looking at one. I’ve never seen this one before!

While I don't live in the beautiful countryside that you do I am spoiled by the availability of art in my part of the world. Within a reasonable drive, I can see any number of Van Goghs and virtually any other artists you can think of. Living in central NJ in the middle of the North East Corridor with a population of 50 million people, I have easy access to dozens of world-class museums in Washington DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Newark, New York City, Hartford CT and Boston When I see how excited you were over seeing a single Van Gogh I realized how incredibly lucky I am.

Yes, photography is intrusive. Hence, I consider the privacy of others when doing my photography.

I always check my surroundings and make sure that photography is acceptable and I will not get into a hassle with somebody before I start clicking away. As a result I've never been kicked out of anywhere or even asked to stop taking pictures. On a few occasions guards have warned me that photography was not allowed when they saw me with a camera over my shoulder, but I almost always knew that ahead of time and have asked when I don't.

Years ago I was in a museum in East Berlin during the Communist Occupation of that part of the city. We had driven through Check Point Charlie. A guard came over and told me I could not use my camera. I held up a $5.00 U.S Bill and nodded yes?? The guard glanced around momentarily, grabbed it, and left the room. As I moved from room to room he pleasantly nodded his approval to me.

The short approach to Beale Air Force Base during the arrival of the first SR-71 in 1966. I was working for the local paper and my boss wanted a silhouette of the plane as it flew over. The SR71 belly was classified. After I took the picture i noticed two pair of highly polished boots beside my head as I lay on my back. I was "escorted" to the base by the two Air Policemen. My camera was confiscated (later returned sans film) and questioned about my intent. Their lab developed the film that showed just the silhouette confirming my story. I was allowed to take a series of pictures on the flight line; one of which hung in the commanders office for a few years. My bosses pictures were on the front page, none of mine were used. The official operation began in 1967 but planes were delivered in '66 for training flight crews.

I had the reverse happen to me. I had tickets for the Terry Fator show in Las Vegas and was told at the gate that no photography was allowed. Since I had my P&S with me from walking the Strip, I put it in my bag, intending to be a good girl. Several minutes into the show, Mr. Fator himself acknowledged that, while photography was not allowed, he knew we had our cameras with us, so go ahead and take pictures. He was okay with it. Just no videos. What a great guy!

Don't know if this incident qualifies as the best place or worst place to be tossed out of but it assuredly ranks as one of the most unusual. Many years ago I lived in Chesterfield County, Virginia , which is about 100 miles from the Atlantic. One Saturday I carried a load of shrubbery trimmings to the county landfill. I was unolading the trimmings when all of a sudden there seemed to be hundreds of seagulls coming in for a landing. I grabbed the Kodak camera I always carried with me, stepped clear of the car, and raised the camera to record the scene when someone yelled "Stop!". I looked around and it was a landfill employee walking towards me. He said
(are you ready for this?) "No picture taking allowed in the landfill." I asked him if he was serious and he assured me that he was and that the ban on taking pictures in the landfill was written policy. To this day I cannot think of any reason for such a ban. Guess I am the only person who has been kicked out of a landfill for taking a picture.

Back in the old Yankee Stadium, I was shooting from the press photographers assigned area. At the time I was a young staff photographer at Newsday Newspaper in New York. It was a Yankee MLB playoff game, and I had covered the Yankees for a couple of seasons already.

The credentialed photographers' area was a semi-submerged dugout on the first base line . I was about 6 ft. 4 inches tall with an Afro hair style at the time, and press photographers at that time had to stand up in the photographers dugout .

Well some well-healed Yankee season ticket holder placed a call to the Yankee's office to complain that I was blocking his view of the game and he demanded I be moved. For a playoff and world series game the amount of press photographers covering the game had more that doubled and there was no other assigned space for me. The Yankee sent officials to remove me from my credentialed and assigned shooting position, and I was escorted out of Yankee Stadium under protest.

I called my newspaper and told them what happened and my editors were livid and call the Yankee's owners and demanded an apology and my immediate return to the field.

As a result, the Yankees made an immediate change to the photographers dugout and installed stools so we photogs could shoot games seated down, and not standing. The Yankees went on to win the World Series that year and yes I was there covering when Yankee Reggie Jackson hit three consecutive World Series Home Runs in three consecutive at-bats, with just three swings .

I have covered countless MLB games and six World Series, three with the Yankees, three with the Phillies, and all other pro sports around the world in five decades as a photojournalist. I have shrunk a couple of inches in my older age, and have lots less hair now. LOL.

Cheers and best to you.

Went to Denmark to visit son. Rental unit in Copenhagen a couple blocks from the sea. First morning went over to the water in the dark to find a good spot to shoot the sunrise and was setting up my large tripod. Soon approached by dour middle aged woman who told me to move along. So I did. As light emerged I realized the locals came here to swim naked.

September 2017. Sofia Museum in Madrid, Spain. All works by Picasso EXCEPT Guernica can be photographed. I did not get a good answer from the staff. Can somebody here from UHH explain why?
