I was seeing a Doctor one morning and he said he was very upset. His dearly loved dog had woken him during the night, and when he went to her, she had suffered a stroke. He, of course took her to the vet that morning, to be "put to sleep".

As it happened I had just printed off a copy of Rainbow Bridge, which a showed him. We both had a weep.

I am so surprised that there are so few replies to this post. Maybe it's just too hard for some. Thank you for the post, bcheary. I sit here with tears streaming down my face and find it difficult to see to type. We just lost our old female Great Dane, Dega, to cancer, and only a few months ago lost our young male Dane, Hans, to congestive heart failure. As an old Christian Minister, I know that the Rainbow Bridge is nor real, but in my heart, I need it to be. That poem has probably brought solace to more people over the years than we could ever imagine.

You are welcome. I feel your pain. Over our 32 years of marriage we have had to put down a total of seven dogs. To hold their paws and watch them close their eyes for the last time is heartbreaking. Still brings tears to my eyes as I write this. We are now are on our eighth pup which we adopted from a shelter. Keep the faith my friend and I am sure you will soon be getting another dog to love and cherish.

over almost 70 years of marriage we had loved ten dogs. All gone now, and we are too old to care for another. MY heart is full of lovely old friends. I ache for a furry pal.

I have lost several pets one way or another. Age, disease, predators, and traffic. Cats, dogs, and chickens.

But the 'rainbow bridge' has been around a long time. The earliest version I have come across is from Wagner's Ring cycle. In 'Das Rheingold', the first opera in the cycle, Wotan steals the magic ring (and the Rheingold) from Alberich, the Nibelung, who stole it from the Rheinmaidens. He uses the gold to pay the Giants to build Valhalla, the castle of the gods. At the end of the first opera Loge (god of fire) opens the way to Valhalla by creating the rainbow bridge from mists and vapors. Wagner took 26 years to write the 4 operas of the cycle, starting in 1848.

PS: The two Giants were named Fafner and Fasholt. They were strong and old, and at the end of the opera, they fight over the ring, with Fafner killing Fasholt. And that is why a popular brand of bearings are called 'Fafner bearings' rather than 'Fasholt bearings'.

I love both cats and dogs, mostly of dogs in my past, and cats recently. The cats are all fairly young, the oldest about six. I am fairly old too, 64, and the cats are surely good for a little levity. We will all lose our critters, it hurts, though there can always be another, if fewer.

May God Bless you and keep you.
