Another GREAT Pancake lens for Nikon F (and Canon if that's your thing)

Wow! That Voigtlander lens looks suspiciously like my Meike 35mm F/1.4!

Voigtlanders are made by Cosina in Japan. Meike is a completely different company located in China, Meike manufactures, among their other accessories, inexpensive manual focus lenses. Like several similar Chinese companies, (TTArtisan, 7Artisan, Laowa, etc) their lenses are generally very good value, especially considering their build quality and very low price point. Any Meike lenses that look even remotely similar to Voigtlander (or Leica lenses) is a result of them copying some of the features of those manufacturers. In this case, however, they are not similar. Look more carefully.

WTH do people ask questions if they don’t care about the answer? Not that I give a fat rat’s ass.

You don't have to be a King to know that you can eat pancakes and not pancake lenses.

Sorry to say, but a discussion of what and why a type of lens called a "Pancake" lens is and what it would due seems to not be of interest. As it is so often on the Hog there are those who are more interested in stating random opinions and are not interested in the craft of the subject. Thu one gets no discussion.

Funny. It seems like at three pages in there is some interest, (and as I post this it’s 7 pages). As for stating random opinions I believe your previous post of bad information falls into that realm.

You don't care about the answer to the question you just asked.

Do they buy just to be hip but never use them and go back to the standard range zoom lens after a couple of hours leaving the pancake on the shelf collecting dust?

I bought an inexpensive vintage Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 SERIES E pancake lens on the recommendation of The Angry Photographer. The lens was made in the early 1980's in Japan. With its chrome ring, it looks great on my Nikon DF and D850. While it's a manual focus lens, it's easy to use and takes great photos, and it's so small that it fits in a pocket for portability. The lens' size makes it unobtrusive for street photography and produces excellent results with deep and rich colors.

Provided that IQ is maintained then surely the shorter (flatter) a lens can be is best. As a Panny MFT photographer I have owned several Panny pancake zooms. They are all good value, but I moved back to equivalent (or close to) focal lengths, and now use a 45-175 internal focus, internal zoom, length 9.5 cms, and a 14-45 max length 9 cms, both have the edge in IQ. The 14-45 was the original MFT lens (2008) - so it had to be good. The 45-175 works with dual IS on my G80. For me IQ is the top priority (within my budget, of course) and I am satisfied I have that, with as little bulk as possible. BUT my G80 (retro rangefinder) with a pancake zoom was a great fit under my anorak. I often feel that the lugs which hold shoulder straps to cameras should be fitted to the bottom plate - so that the camera points downwards instead of in it's usual phallic position!

Nah I wouldn't try to eat a pancake lens.

I almost always have my Lumix mirrorless and the pancake 1:1.7 with me and I estimate that 2/3 of the photos I shoot are with that combination. We visit the Philadelphia flower show almost every year and indoor photos usually need a tripod or flash, which distorts the colors. The weight doubles when I use a tele lens. I am webmaster for a number of websites and don't need huge photos for these.

The camera is lightweight and the lens is hardly noticeable like most cell-phones. It appears to be an ancient camera and People often ask where I get my film developed, So there is less likelihood of someone stealing it.

I got one of those with an FG, or was it the EM? Either way, I thought it was rather toy-ish & didn't take it seriously as I had been shooting with a sweet vintage 50mm f2 H lens. I remember "accidently" destroying the pancake lens and throwing it into the trash bin. Had I known about the fuss people are making about them today, (and on these 7 pages so far!) I'd have been a bit more careful. (Please note: I didn't really put syrup on it and eat it, as my previous post indicated...)

It was just a general question about why people like pancake lenses, but evidently it upset you. I see all sorts of offers for discussion on this forum that I ignore. I have never used a pancake lens, but imagine that they could be handy for grab shots and would help to make the camera you're carrying much more portable. This forum would be rather pointless all we did was send questionaires to each other and then shared the results. Have you used a pancake lens? How did it work for you? Thanks
