Why do people get all hyped up over pancake lenses?
Do they buy just to be hip but never use them and go back to the standard range zoom lens after a couple of hours leaving the pancake on the shelf collecting dust?

I bought one because the price and focal length were right. As for looking hip, that comes naturally to me.

Life's most persistent and urgent question is: do you own a pancake lens?

Great walk around on my D850. What I love; 40mm angle of view and a hard stop at infinity.

Voigtlander Ultron 40mm f/2 SL IIS Aspherical Lens for Nikon F

Wow! That Voigtlander lens looks suspiciously like my Meike 35mm F/1.4!

No it doesn"t, your lens is deeper obviously to incorporate additional lens elements to allow a 35mm focal legnth to clear the minimum flange distance

Pancake lenses are compact prime lenses usually around 40mm for a Film or FF digital "35mm Camera".

I was born in 1944 but my mother had a commemorative postage stamp of the 1939 Words Fair- it had an image of a futuristic structure, a sphere, and a sort of triangular tower that was symbolic of that occasion. I missed the N.Y Words Fair in 1964

So you missed my performance at the New York State Pavilion on Valley Stream Day. I sang and played guitar to "He's got the whole world in his hands". That was my first public musical performance!

I get the humor. But the humor is actually that you clicked on the topic, thought of a comment, wrote the comment, maybe edited your comment, and hit send. And I bet you are reading the comments about your comment. 😂. But you don’t care?

Funny but true.

Like a bridge camera is good for taking pictures of bridges, a pancake lens is good for...

I had a pancake lens for my Olympus OM2s (I regret selling all my Olympus film kit) and it was great for street shooting, esp while traveling in other countries, as was unobtrusive.
