The UHH is a trove of good information and recommendations. Especially when it comes to buying equipment.
B&H, Roberts, Allen's, Hunt, plus many others are highly rated. Adorama, in NYC, has been included as well.
Not for me...from now on.
I just found that the plugin adapter for my Nikon MH-25a battery charger is lost.
So, I looked to buy a new MH-25a. Checked NikonUSA and found it to sell for an MSRP of $57.95. B&H and others had it for $54.95--not in stock.
Adorama had it, in stock, for $74.95!
I started at 9:05 this morning with online chat to see why the higher price and whether they would change it. 8 more chats, phone calls and 4 hours later, I finally got hold of a 'manager of customer service' in the NYC store. 20 minutes later she said to purchase online and contact her and she will credit me the B&H price difference.
I purchased the adapter only on E-bay, new, for $10.75 including tax and delivery.
If Adorama had posted this for NikonUSA's MSRP, I would have purchased it. If anyone else had it in stock..I would have purchased it.
But Adorama plays games. And these games are not for the benefit of their customers.
The fact that they are selling over manufacturer's MSRP is wrong. This does not engender confidence in a company and their claimed commitment to the customer. Nor does it make one confident that they will properly service their customer.
In my opinion, from this day on, they do not deserve my consideration--ever.
There are too many other good dealers that don't play games and deserve my business.
Everyone will decide who they deal with on their own.
This is my recent experience with Adorama. F minus.
The UHH is a trove of good information and recomme... (show quote)

Thanks

Grow up. Demand pricing is a fact of life for airline tickets, hotel rooms, automobiles, stuff on Amazon, groceries, and the list goes on and on. If one retailer has a scarce item in stock and ready to ship it's more valuable than MSRP. And $20 is hardly price gouging!

The owners of B&H and Adorama are related. I think they are cousins. Just a little tidbit of info.
Don

I believe the owner of B&H and the late owner of Adorama were related by marriage.

I've bought from Adorama many times and dealt with their customer service as well. They are as good as B&H or any of the other photo dealers. And have been around a long time.

Completely agree. I’ve dealt with Adorama, KEH and, most recently, MPB. No issues of any kind.

Not defending this on AT ALL, but… Abe’s Of Main has also been around a long time. I remember their ads in the back of the photo mags at least back to the mid-70s, along with the rest of them.

The NAME Abe's of Maine has been around a long time. It is not the same company it used to be.

WOW! What a waste of time all for $20.00. If you didn't like the price, I don't understand why you didn't buy from another photo dealer? I find Adorama and B&H, etc. very reputable. Well, you should be very happy that you bought one from e-bay for $10.75. Was that ta third item?

I assumed that B&H and Adorama always sold at list price. Now I see that that isn't true. So I definitely will shop around for anything.

So you are basically saying that you consider a company that was offering a piece of equipment at $20 above what Nikon USA shows as its price for the identical item is "playing games".

Was 8 chats and the phone calls really worth haggling over $20? We are in an era of price variations, shipping cost changes, shortages, old and new stock pricings e.t.c. You have come on a forum whining about a company over $20 even after they had said they would credit the difference, wow.

I don't know about back in the 70s, but every time I HAVE heard of Abe's, it's been described as a place to stay clear of.

First off, I have never had the experience at B&H, Robert's, or Allen's of charging over MSRP.
Second, as a Professor who has influence over many neophytes; I am quite sure that you would be appalled if you heard that one of your students took up your suggestion and purchased something from a recommended vendor that was over the MSRP. And maybe it wasn't $20 (a cheap lesson), but $350.
Renowned Professor and Professional Photographer recommends unethical vendors to students--would not be a good headline.
Cheers.

A professor and influencer? God help us. This post is almost a caricature of what’s wrong with education in the 2000s. Is the “Renowned professor” a self congratulatory title?

I don't have enough time to post as many congratulatory smilies as your reply to this pompous, self-important blowhard deserves so, I will just say, good job and you were too nice to him/her/them/they/it et al (or whatever they go by these days).

Having a background in marketing I could give him a multipage explanation of what was actually happening but won't because it would waste my time and would go over his lofty cranium.

BTW, I have had many excellent experiences with Adorama and never a problem. They have steered me to lower priced items on a couple of occasions.

I don't think that the learned professor is aware that Adorama and B&H are related, so there is another tassle he can take out of his mortarboard.

I understood what he wrote.
It seems you did not.
Easy enough to try again.
Theres no self congratulation.
