I think it's quite good but I have a lot to learn. I don't even know how to save the file correctly right now. I did some cropping and save it but the saved file is still full not cropped.

go to edit at top left, then click options ,when that opens, look at all the options--it might not be set to save, and you can save it as a sidecar(it will keep raw and jpeg file next to each other) then go to file and save.you will see your cropped pic and your original pic.

The NX studio is the same workflow: start in Nikon, output TIFF, finish in PSE.

If you don't feel you do much heavy lifting, consider just full-res JPEG output from NX Studio and finish, if needed in PSE.

Note the comment above that NX studio is pretty much the processing of the camera, obviously with plenty of edit options to make it different than the camera. Is a JPEG output from NX Studio worse / better than a JPEG from the camera without the extra step? If you continue capturing in RAW, you can come back to the RAW in the future if you add software that edits the new(er) NEF files directly.

well said!

Do you make prints often from your files? If you do I recommend to edit your RAW data with NX Studio. It is the editor I use for RAW files from my Nikon cameras and the recommendation to use it came from a technician at a local professional printing lab.
It is a pretty simple editor but it is all I need since I do not do complicated manipulations with it. When I am done with NX Studio I do the rest of what I have to do to a saved TIFF before converting to JPEG. I am very satisfied with it and I have been using it for several years.

If you do not print often then any editor for your RAW files will do. The reason why I use NX Studio is because when printing files I know the colors will be accurate, assuming I keep the calibration of my monitor. NX Studio was specifically designed to edit Nikon RAW data.

I use Nikon studio as my cataloging and sorting medium. All my folders are right on the left side of my screen. What little PP I do it works for me. But then again I shoot JPG most of the time, it does support RAW processing. I have found the masking feature better with Photo shop elements. I also use the Nikon transfer program to move files from camera to computer via a cable. In closing yes it works for me.

I have used/tried it & it is really good at the basic adjustment of Nikon's nef files. If your low on the histogram, you can up the Dmax to 1 & it does fantastic job there. Slow at culling (viewing & deciding which to keep or delete). For culling, I use Faststone Image Viewer after transfering from the card to the desktop. So if your just going to make minor adjustments like exposure, highlights, contrast, etc. , it will serve you good enough. If you care do something like local adjustments via brush work, radial &* graduated adjustments in your editing, you will need something else like Lightroom, Capture 1, Topaz, Luminar, or...

I use it quite a bit and find it sufficient for most of my needs. I hate the ongoing cost of photoshop stuff.

I used to use Nikon software, like NX Studio, to do all my editing as I did think that Nikon would know the most about their own RAW files. About 15 years ago, I switched to LrC because the Nikon OEM was garbage. I have been most happy ever since as I feel that LrC was, is and continues to be so much better. Bear in mind that I must reduce several thousand images to about 100 in as short a time as possible, and LrC is a LARGE factor in helping me do exactly that. YMMV. Best of luck. (P.S. I have experimented with NX Studio, and still prefer LrC by a long shot!!)

I like it and often in conjunction with other programs. I find that it is very helpful with basic editing functions, for example if a photo is very underexposed, and with color reproduction (very accurate, since it's a Nikon software). RAW files will always look dull and not colorful in the program, but once you import the file and do the basic editing color reproduction is very accurate. It's an improvement over the older Nikon software and best of all, it's free, so if you don't like it you can easily uninstall. There are lots of tutorials on YouTube as well.

I have been using NX Studio for several years now; it does what I want it to do. I am a minimalist, am not into editing a digital image so much that next to the original it is nearly unrecognizable! Things like sky replacement are "phony treatments" to me....it is NOT what I saw when I got the shot.

I like NX Studio because I can now process most any NEF file; for a long time I could not open D850 NEFs with my version of Lightroom. I have used Studio to go back and reprocess older images and fine tune them to my liking or to my memory. The only reason I still have my older version of Lightroom is to flip an image around along its horizontal axis.

Of note, NX Studio is best for processing NEF files; I have tried touching out cell phone images with Studio and the options are more limited.

I use NX Studio and recommend it . The price is great--free.

I use it primarily to review/cull images before processing in DXO PL& Elite version. I renders the imbedded Jpeg quickly and you need just one key, Delete, to delete an image. It is fast for culling.

Nikon Transfer is part of NX Studio. It allows you to download images from your Nikon camera or card reader at the same time you create a file folder and images names unique to the download taking place. Some use it just for this.

For local adjustments there is a Control Point function that is limited but at least it is there.

It is designed for use with multiple monitors if you have that need.

I also use it to check specific AF settings used in various images. Some third party programs do not display that information.

Ignore most comments regarding "clunky" as those problems were solved by Nikon a few years ago. Stated differently, only you can determine how it works on your particular laptop or desktop computer.

Its User Manual is a lot better than some third party software manuals too.

My opinion FWIW: it is free so if you have the necessary hardware then do the download and try it. If it's not for you then the Uninstall feature is easy and effective.

Opinions are like a certain anatomical feature: everybody has one.

It has limited functionality but for free it is definitely worth looking at. I use it every once in a while but prefer DxO PhotoLab 6.

It’s free, from where?

Thanks
