Ans: you use the LR import dialog.
Before spending more money, just watch some free getting started videos, either from Adobe's subscriber-only section on their website, see "Support". Or, search utube. If you want to see the Mac-centric versions, try:
google utube lightroom getting started mac
You really should exhaust the free options before buying the same thing for money.
Thanks I will check it out
Try The Lightroom Queen,
https://www.lightroomqueen.com/, this is a completely reputable site that has a lot of free material including “Lightroom Classic, Quick Start” eBook. Just follow the Start Here arrow.

The first thing you have to do on a Mac is to defeat the "default imaging application selection" for imaging file downloads. Often, this is Photos. If you have downloaded images to Photos, you will have to Export them as Originals, one by one! That is because Photos sequesters your image files in a Package file in the Pictures folder called, PhotosLibrary.photoslibrary. Don't bother opening the package file... your files in there are renamed nonsensically! (This is one of the few things about MacOS that I find utterly maddening.)
There is a procedure for selecting "NONE" as the default imaging application, which I prefer, so I can use all of the imaging applications I have. Every time I get a new Mac, I have to look it up on Apple's Support site. It involves a bit of voodoo in Image Capture, found in the Applications Folder.

It's actually a sweet environment once you get used to it. It is best for use with iPhone images. When you make an exposure on the phone, it is copied up to iCloud, so you can view, edit, print, text, or email it from your other iDevices (Macs and iPads).
I use Photos for most of my iPhoneography and LrC/Ps for almost everything else. Occasionally, I'll export an original iPhone photo and import it into LrC for finishing with better tools.
For those who hate subscriptions, Photos is free. You can use Affinity Photo 2 (as a plug-in/standalone) and Raw Power (as a plug-in/standalone) to handle bitmap editing and raw conversions and have a decent suite of tools. Only problem... a few camera profiles don't exist in MacOS yet, but do exist in Adobe Camera Raw.
