What is a "Mac Studio Desktop"? Do you mean "iMac"?

No, the Mac Studio is a desktop computer. No monitor. Just a CPU with abundant ports and 32gb of RAM. Apple first introduced the Studio a year or so ago. I purchased this one in November 2022 from the local Apple retail store.

OK. I'm just familiar with it.

Can this be plugged into an older iMac desktop to use as a monitor?

Maybe you misunderstand the question. I want to use my older iMac as the monitor for the Mac studio. Is that possible?

It should be. I was told I could use my old iMac as a monitor for a Mac Mini. This is the same type of situation. (I ended up just buying a new iMac, instead).

Won't work, I think.

Depends on how old your iMac is ... but Apple removed "target mode" that allowed using the iMac as a monitor from iMacs about 10 years ago (or more). So if it is earlier than 2014, it might work as a display, but apparently has to connect to an older (2019 or earlier) Mac running High Sierra or earlier. So won't work with the newish Mac Studio.

Here is info from Apple. Funny, I recall it differently. I thought it was holding down command-T on the "display" iMac at startup and then connecting to another cpu with Thunderbolt cable.
But that's not what Apple says. (was so long ago I may be mistaken).

You might be able to "Share" the screen over ethernet or wifi, but that is much slower than a real display.

No. Use a regular monitor made for graphic arts applications. It was possible many years ago, but no longer.
