Is there an extender that will successfully mate with the 24-70mm lens?

Not any branded versions, maybe a Kenko or similar third party. The idea is ill-conceived, at best, and technical impossible in nearly all implementations, even before discussing the resulting image quality.

24 is wide enough most of the time. 50 is fast enough most of the time.

My 24-70 equivalent (a 12-35/2.8 on Micro 4/3) is on my camera about 70% of the time.

For my upcoming Rhine river trip in April I plan to take Sony A7IV, Sony 24-105mm FE and Zeiss Touit 12mm 2.8.
I also carry Sony RX100 IV for street scene shootings. Sony 24-105mm is rated as the best FE lens on par with 24-70mm in term of sharpness.

If you buy a 1.4 TC make sure it will work with the target lens. I have a Sony 1.4 teleconverter. It only fits on my Sony 100-400. It is well worth it, but disappointing that it cannot be used with other lenses.

I have been to Milan and carried a DX camera, an 18-105mm Nikon and a 50mm f1.8. The zoom covered everything I wanted to shoot during the day and the fast prime was used after dark and at dinner with our group.

Since you specifically say that you want to travel light, I would suggest starting by limiting your choices to your 24-70 f/2.8. If you historically use your 16-35 exreme wide angle quite a bit, it's the second lens I'd consider taking. The 35mm f/2.8 is redundant unless you think you want a small, lighter weight outfit for specific daily outings. The 50/1.8 also seems a mostly redundant. While the extra 1.5 stops might be occasionally beneficial, it's too long for building interiors and longer than most folks use for street photography. Of course, you might have some other great use for it that we haven't thought of.

I attended a railroad history and modeler's convention in a major city last summer. As an experiment, I took two cameras...one full frame and one DX. Each had one lens...a 24-120mm f/4. We did a train trip and multiple bus tours, and there were numerous activities in the meeting hotel. I found that either of my two setups would have done everything I needed. (The full-frame was a slightly better choice.)

While there may be times that you secretly wish for something a little bit longer, my guess is that you would be quite happy with your 24-70mm zoom. And if your habits include wide shots, the 16-35mm.

I have the Sony 24-105 which covers most of your wide needs and surpasses what you have for reach. On top of that, there is no need to switch lenses, so no fear of missing the shot. And on top of all that it is a superb lens.

If I were going back to Milan I’d bring gear so I could take interior and night pictures of the Duomo. Wide angle will help as well. If you are going to lake Maggiore then a landscape lens as well. Enjoy!

Lake Maggiore is in the itinerary. Perhaps I"ll add Kamlan 50mm f/1.1 and Sony 10-18mm for landscape. Leave Touit 12mm at home.

You are right again! If you look up the Sony 1.4 to the right it has a link to a compatible chart and the 24-70 2.8 is listed on the chart but regardless that you clicked the link they told you to, it does not take you straight to the info you are looking for. If you scroll all the way to the bottom, the 1.4 is listed, and if you click that it takes you to another screen and then you have to click compatibility again, and finally it brings up about six or seven large telephoto lenses that will work with the 1.4. Why they couldn't just give you the info straight out is aggravating! The Kenko Pro300 I use is an excellent unit and keeps virtually all of the sharpness of the lenses I have used it with. It does not have a part that extends into the back of the lens and could be used with the Sony system if they only made one -- they do not. I don't know why some companies leave out producing products that would be useful and hopefully profitable for the company. With the expansion of Sony as a prime seller of cameras it seems to be short-sighted on their part. I know some companies will only license lenses etc. that do not compete with their own line. Nikon recently announced it would allow Tamron (and most likely Sigma) to make lenses for the z system as long as the lenses don't repeat the same features as what Nikon has. So far only one Tamron lens has been released.
