'65 Cobra 427. The one that Carroll Shelby kept for himself.

For a Cobra, I would love to have one with the 327 motor. I always thought that the 427 was overkill - you couldn't keep the rear wheels from spinning.

All of this talk about GTO's and XKE's and no photos? All of the XKE's here are from 1961 and the Ferrari GTO is a 1962.

I may get laughed at. I am 72 and always loved the GTO. I think the Corvette is hot also.
I looked at the XKE. I don't like the pointed rear end. The way the windshield meets the hood is a sharp drop and makes the passenger area look more like a box. It does look sportier with the top down.
Ford (Fix or repair daily) GTO (Gas tires and oil) BMX (Bring money withya.)
These are from the 60's and all my classmates would laugh.

Almost as nice as the Ford GT and especially compared to some potato- like things you see on the roads today.

How about the original 289 Cobra?

I would love to have the 289 version Cobra. I saw somewhere that a limited version had a 289 bored out to 327 but the 289 would be great. One complaint I read about the 427 had to do with weight. On a twisted road the 289 had a distinct advantage. But it doesn't matter. I can't afford either one. I'll stick to my 12V Cummins Ram.

I am an artist so I look at most everything as 'objects' and there is beauty. in everything. Sergei Bogart, a teacher of mine and a unique friend taught me that "even garbage can be a work of art if done right!". With this said there are a lot of cars that are BEAUTIFUL, but for me there is one that really stands out. You can see it on YouTube as the "Copper Caddie".

Others can have the most beautiful car in their minds and that's wonderful because they are beautiful, but the 'Copper Caddie" for me tops the scales. When I looked at the cars in this sight those that were made in very limited editions all are also beautiful.

The Cobras were absolute beasts, no points awarded for practicality. I had a '63 Galaxie with the 450 hp 427. A hellacious amount of torque but equipped with a limited slip differential made it manageable. I did have to feather the clutch a bit off the line. Of course a full size car was a lot more weight than a fiberglass bodied Cobra.

As far as I know, Ford did not produce a 327. Stock Ford Engines of that era (1965) as I recall were the 260 and 289 in the Mustangs and the 352, 390, and 427 in the other lines. Pretty sure that both the 4 bbl (410 hp) and the dual quad (425 hp) 427s were special orders only. My Ford, and the only Ford car that I ever owned, I purchased used just before ETS at Fort Hood from a guy on orders for Vietnam who was pretty desperate to get out from under the payments . I had saved up a good bit of money while in Vietnam. I never went on R&R and where I was it wasn't handy to get to the ville and the whores. Also, it was a bit dangerous to be too far from friendly forces.

The Cobra was not a beautiful car, but like the A-10 it projects an aura of "don't mess with me." A serious car for serious drivers.

Nope - you can’t bore out a 289 Ford to 327 - not nearly enough room between cylinder walls (the 327 was a Chevy engine). The 289 has a 4.00” bore. Even at .060 over, you just gain a few cu in. The Ford 302 is the same block with the same 4.00 inch bore, and a longer stroke, but never heard of one being used in a Cobra. The 427 “Snake” was evolved to compete with the C2 427 Stingrays in A Production class, and there were some legendary battles between the two, many of which I’ve had the pleasure of watching.

“Real” vintage Cobras fetch an outrageous price, but if you want to experience one, you can build a Factory Five kit replica for a reasonable amount, and you’d be hard pressed to tell the difference from the original side-by-side. There are plenty of others manufacturing replicas, but the Factory Five kits are really first class and accurate, right down to the wheels.

So many muscle cars from that era.

I had a '68 Firebird 400 4sp so I am partial to Firebirds. All Corvettes, GTOs, Chevelles and some of the Mopar cars are all wonderful. I left out '66 and later Mustang Fastbacks. Add them to my desirable's list.
