LAND YACHT from yesteryear! 5-6 mpg, but who cared back then? Gas could still be found for a quarter a gallon. Peak of the horsepower era! Lots of torque, lots of speed, lots of smiles!

Yup. I still remember the gas wars back in the '60s!

Dad had a '64 Electra. I loved that car. Took us to Grand Canyon from Chicago area in '68. Dad kept records of gas mileage and got 16 mpg towing a pop-up camper, full trunk, 2 parents and 5 kids age 7 to 16. It had a cavernous trunk and with the front seat all the way back, a large man could be comfortable in the back seat with lots of knee room. I drove that car 4 miles each way to college in during winter of '74-'75 and got 4 mpg (gas was still sub $1/gal). Huge V-8 (445?). When it's life was over, a garage used it in a demo derby. The track was wet clay. With rear wheel drive and no weight in the back it got stuck and all the other racers ignored it. Sad end for a beautiful machine.
