The cylinder was designed to hold gear oil as has a add oil hole ,drain hole with plug, and the square plug was probably a fill to this hole plug. My guess is a lever of sorts for a piece of industrial or farm machinery.

I think you're the closest so far - whatever it is!

I think it was made by a metal worker for no other purpose than to get people guessing what it is. 🤣

There's a manuscript like that. It's written in an undecipherable language, and it contains beautiful drawings of unknown plants. No one has been able to make any sense of it.

In pictures # 3-4 does the plug sitting on this thing fit the thredded hole ??? In pictures # 5-6 there is a small 1/4 inch plug that could be for a drain. In picture # 7 does the square block, by the threadded hole, come out ???

The plug might be the same size of the threaded hole, but it's still frozen. I'm still trying to break all fitting loose with Blaster Penetrating spray but they aren't budging, yet. The plug takes 10mm, so the wrench isn't very large. I've also tried a large adjustable wrench. I'm going to try putting it in a vise and adding a pipe to the adjustable wrench after it soaks more.

The square block by the treaded hole doesn't appear to be removable, but I'm going to try.

It may be a couple days before I get to working (playing) on it, I have to return to the doctor. I'm having issues with skin cancer surgery down by my ankle. I was supposed to keep my legs elevated that I haven't been doing much of because I'm busy with our business. Guess at 75 I don't heal like I used to. So now I'm paying for not doing what the doctor said.

I'm doing a lot better now. Here are photos of the mystery thingamajig.

Does any of this explain what this is?

After putting it in my vice I got the bolt to come out.

It did fit in the other hole. Maybe that bolt was missing.

That allowed the channel to rotate to this opened slot. Maybe if the top nut was wound down tight to secure the handle, then loosened the lower nut it would rotate the unit. Didn't think of that until just now. I'll try that later some day.

Next I tried to loosen this band around it but the bolt was bent slightly and wouldn't go past this. If it had to loosen, I could cut the bent part off, but instead I sprayed it more, I'll try again another free day.

Not yet, but keep at it! You'll get it eventually. Just remember how and where everything goes when you put it back together! That's been my problem, sometimes, but I now do as you are, and take pictures every step of the way. It's so much easier with all the cameras available now. I'm really curious to see, hopefully - finally - what it is! And I still want to know how that handle relates to the use of the assembly.

Hi Loren
Yes, from past experiences I now always take photos when disassembling something I'm not familiar with. It will be interesting to see what happens when I get that ring to rotate, and hopefully be able to take the whatchamacallit all apart to see what's inside. Some bolts are still frozen, and I don't want to break the heads off using a breaker bar, so I'm still soaking them.

I hope you keep at it. If you come across museums of old farm equipment - or any old equipment - maybe someone there would recognize it. It's obviously not one of a kind, so people should be able to identify it.

Good idea Jerry. Somehow, I'm going to figure this out, but no hurry. In between other projects and still traveling to events in our business I'll disassemble it as far as I can. I plan on eventually solving this mystery. I'll keep posting photos as it comes apart or until I break a bolt.
