I think you found George Costanza’s Johnson rod.

That is without a doubt the ubiquitous Johnson rod. Essential to all mechanical devices

That threaded hole probably had a plug and was for filling it with oil for lubrication. I have no earthly idea what this could be used for.

And the threaded hole perplexes me.

Thanks, but if it was it would be for bending something small.

It looks like it could be a wire bender. The groove would hold the wire. However it does look rather complex for what should be a simple device.

I hope you can find someone who can identify it so you can let us know what it is.

That my friend is a metal “thing-a-ma-jig. Very rare that you would find one in such good condition.

Used to tighten barbed wire…..or not.

Good guess, but it would have to be something small and smooth to go thru the channel that the groove is only 1/4".

You mentioned that you were able to free it up to the point where you could reposition what appears to be a “control/adjustment” handle. Did you see any movement or change anywhere else as a result? Did anything rotate? Was there ratcheting?

I see what looks like '2X' or 'X2', wondering what that means.

Also if we knew what this threaded part is for it would help identify what the contraption is.

A Pipe Bender,plus steel bender.

It only has a 1/4" groove in the flat channel that is lined up with a bolt. Doesn't look like it is meant to bend anything.
