Free download. Great interface, best use of screen space, does all you will need, intuitive:
FastStone Image Viewer

I agree. Faststone is a great little program. I use it often just to view or sort images. It will open a variety of image files and allows simple editing and adjustments.

And it is FREE!

I'm only finding Capture One Express (for Sony) as a trial version. Sony simply refers you to the Capture One site. Chuck

I have to agree that at first glance, it looks like a trial version.

But, here are the finer details:
Is Capture One Express for Sony free?
Once installed on your computer, you'll be asked which version of the software you want to install; choose Capture One Express (for Sony) and it'll be free to use - forever.

I’m glad that somebody agrees. I have multiple higher level programs that go unused. I wonder why so many. Hogs are needing to edit the hell out of their photos. I find that FastStone takes care of all my needs 99% of the time. I find it annoying when faced with other editing screes less intuitive to use. Just for the record, yes 94 years old, high level equipment, MFA retired professor of fine art photography. 50 years ago I was known for Photography made impossible. Students from those days are still in constant contact, full of thanks.
My
Impression is that a lack of understanding of basic principles leads to confusion. Things that you see with your own eyes are not as obvious as it seems. I still start with “everything you KNOW is wrong”. We need to get below the surface to understand what is going on.

Get Photoshop Elements 2021; buy it from Staples or Best Buy, etc. and buy it outright. That way you avoid the annual subscription. It's a great product and offers a lot of function.

Good Luck

Photoshop Elements is not a subscription, it is a stand alone program not requiring connection to the internet to function. There is a one time purchase price , usually about $100 when new, but it can be obtained at a discount later in the year of its release. The current version is PSE 2023.

Well, so much for Capture One. I downloaded it from their site and installed it and it crashes every time I try to open it. Anti-virus or nothing else I can find is preventing it from opening. Chuck

The goal of my photography is to have fun... PS is not fun, it is an ego thing, and turns off many to photo editing, perhaps even to photography.

PSE, combined with a $12 Elements+, is very versatile combo, the + opens doors of PS tools suppressed for Elements. http://elementsplus.net/

Paintshop Pro is also an effective editing program and has a how to guides
https://www.paintshoppro.com/en/learn/how-to/

I find that my Topaz plug in make life easy and give the ability to spice photos effortlessly. Yes, all can be done in PS, but it takes a long time while with Topaz plugin, change is quick and easy.

Buy PSPro and Topaz Plugins and keep them as is for year and years of satisfying, having fun, photography. PS is a puzzle you do not need to solve; a puzzle that will turn you off to editing.

There are basic tools that you will use, crop, clone, straighten, prospective, brighten, contrast... that is about all you need to master to start... and they are easy. Open your photo and then save the opened photo adding Mod A, so if you mess up no problem... or use the revers tool at the top row to undo what you did.

I downloaded the trial Elements+ & supposedly installed it on my computer but, I don't find it when I open Elements. I keep looking @ the instructions but can't figure out where it went. Any ideas?

If you want a program that is easy to learn and easy to use and inexpensive (free!) you might want to try Faststone Image Viewer.
If you want more and better features I feel that Lightroom is much easier to learn and use than Photoshop Elements.
I agree with the other posts that Elements is an excellent program, but I find it much more difficult to use than Lightroom, and only use it rarely, for more complex issues.

Chuck, what are your system (computer) specifications?

I had it on Windows 7, and upgraded to Windows 10 with no problems...

Using Windows 7 and the Version compatible with that system. But can never get it to open or if it does it won't connect to the server to register. It just isn't worth the problems. Too many other options out there. Chuck

Hi. I am a non professional, casual photographer, who loves taking photographs. I just bought a new computer and need a program for editing my photos. I shoot with a Sony 10 iv. Since I don't shoot often, I feel there is no need for me to get a more advanced Photoshop program. Any advice on what I should get is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Tina

Here are samples you can do in PSElements.
The first three are before different exposures. Blended to make the 4th photo.
The 4th is final.
As you can see this photo was taken in the shade.
Fuji Reala Film 35mm. Nikon 24npxl scanner. PSE 5

Thank you Bill.
This was done 2007 and a real learning curve.
I realized that the morning sun would be to left. Meaning the pool features would all be shadowed And no sky.
An I still use PSE today.

I like Elements, and I use it with Elements+, but it does require a learning curve. It is not difficult, but there is a curve.
There are also guided programs in Elements that do the most important things for you, with your input.
The actions that I use most are Tony Kuyper Luminosity masks.

As for free programs, I find that they are worth just what you pay for them. I don't like the programs that come with the cameras either. I find the Elements is the sweer spot the is not too costly and allows me to do most anything.
