Help on sizing

Ok, I may know how to take photos, but sizing is another thing.

I'm entering a photo into a contest the requirements are:
2800 Pixels on the long side
Maximum dimension is 3000 pixels on the long side
Maximum file size 5MB
Recommended format PNG

So below is what I put into Lightroom, but the file ends up being 13mb. How do I get it down to 5mb and keep the 2800 pixels on the long side?
Thank you!

Try reducing the resolution. That may work. Good luck in the contest, too.

Are you sure PNG is a requirement? That seems to be the limiting factor for file size. You might try exporting as Jpeg with a 5 MB limit, then re-export as a PNG.

If you can find out if DNG is a possibility you can convert to DNG with lossy compression.

an image of 2800x1800 would be of about 5MP and would need 15MB uncompressed with 8 bit per color channel. The PNG format can only compress about 10% (because it's lossless) so I don't think it's possible with PNG.

They just suggested the PNG. I can try JPEG. Had not thought of that. Thanks

Ok, will try something else. They just said PNG was recommended, not had to be.

PNG was only the suggested best way. Will use something else. I need to learn about lossy compression….

Thanks! I have a few ideas now on how to reduce.

Is it possible that the people running the contest don't know what they're asking for?

The suggestion for a PGN is a strong indication.

PNG file format is great for vector illustrations. It's a bummer for raster images for it greatly increases the file size with no appreciable difference in quality or print.

It's a simple test for yourself. Take any image you have as a Jpeg and then do a Save As to PNG. When finished saving, compare the two file sizes, and OMG, what a big file you have. Then when you open it you will not see any difference between the two even at the deepest pixel peeping.

We use PNG in vector graphics for it can be saved with a transparent background making it handy for bringing PNG assets in and floating them over other images.

I've entered a lot of shows. GIVE THEM WHAT THEY ASK FOR! If they want PNG, give them PNG. They have their reasons. I normally do this in PS, not in LR. You'll see a difference in the results and I think it's easier. If you insist on using LR, I'd suggest using the "limit size to" option and set it to 5.

There is NO reason to create a 240 ppi file for display on a monitor (for printing: OK) which will display only 72 ppi regardless of what you send it. See what that reduction does. Best of luck.
