I would really like to hear what your thoughts are regarding the Tamron 150-600 G2 lens vs the Nikon 150-500mm lens. I use a Nikon D850 for the camera. Will I get equal quality results with both lens, except the Nikon is only 500mm. I could add a converter to it if needed. Do most of you feel you get good results with converters or does the extra glass add to distortion?
I will use this primarily for wildlife, probably more birds than animals.

Thank you ahead of time for any of your thoughts as it is truly appreciated.

No contest, the Nikon is much sharper at the telephoto end. I shot with that lens in Florida's wetlands for years and got consistent results, you will too. I do not recommend any teleconverter on any lens, or, a 1.4 at the most. Go to where you can get closer to your subjects or learn how to .

Can't say anything about the Nikon lens, but I have the Tamron and am very satisfied with it. I use it @ 600mm alot and am very pleased with the IQ. I also have 3 other Tamrons a 15-30,a 24-70, and a 70-200 all 2.8 G2's. They all work fine for me any.

A few years ago I bought the Tamsrin at the WPPI show in Vegas.
Tested it against my 80-400 Nikon and found it not to be as sharp so after discussions with Tamaron I returned it.
Bought the Nikon 200-500. Happy with my decision.

I cannot speak to the Tamron, but did own the Nikon 200-500 lens. I found it to be excellent in good light. I now shoot with the 500 PF and enjoy the lighter weight and slighter better picture quality but sometimes miss the flexibility of a zoom lens. The 200-500 was a nice match with my D500.

I previously had the Tamron G2 version and liked it. When I bought it it felt better in my small hands than the Nikon. The Tamron has a device you can buy to update firmware and other things. Lastly I had mine focus fine tuned for my camera which is a D750. You will find many like it, some don’t. I don’t think I would consider a tele on it though, not enough light.

I chose the Nikkor 200 - 500mm f5.6 over the Tamron and Sigma 150 - 600mm lenses and never regretted that decision. The 200 - 500mm f5.6 is a cracking lens - I used mine with a D500. Had I stayed with Nikon, I would have also purchased the VF 500mm f5.6 (I also owned the VF 300mm f4). I doubt you will be disappointed if you go with the 200 - 500mm.

I have owned two Tamron long zooms and got rid of them. I have the 200~500 Nikon and love it! I have a couple shorter Tamrons that I like, but will never own another long one! I don't use T/Cs but I do use the 200~500 with a D500 for more "reach" sometimes. It works very well.

I have the G2 150-600 and have tried with the 1.4 but auto focus tough at times. Tamron on the phone said if possible avoid the far reach if possible and back off slightly. They will fine tune the lens and camera if sent back

I would NOT use a converter with either - especially if fast/accurate AF matters
I would also get the Nikon if fast/accurate AF does matter - and crop and use pixel enlargement software if needed for larger printings. The faster f5.6 and being a Nikon lens on a Nikon camera makes for the better AF.
Get a D500 if you are serious about reach/wildlife ...

I had the 200-500 on my D850 and now use it on my Z9. Great lens but I also shoot the Tamron 15-30 2.8 G2 the 24-70 G2 and 70-200 G2 and all are fabulous lens. Fast focus and beautiful IQ. I also owned the holy trinity in Nikon too. If there is such a big difference I don't see it IMO. Yes you can look at the specs and say Wow! the Nikon is 100th of a second quicker but in the real world great for me. I never shot the 150-600.

I shoot a Nikon d810 and a D500 with the Nikon200-500mm F5.6 ED . Here are 2 shoots from the recent Space X Falcon 9 Heavy hand held , one of the rocket leveling out down range and one after booster separation and beginning boost back burn . Shooting with the D500 In manual mode Auto ISO , with limit set at 3200 camera meta data F16 ,1/640 sec ,ISO 3200 , I have close to 75 shots of booster separation to boost back burn of high in the sky on the trip back to the pad . The camera was Maxed out on frames per sec . these were shot in late blue hour . Last shot Nikon d810 of bobcat at about 50 yards all images heavy cropping . All worked in the latest Photoshop with noise reduction in topaz AI , sharpening in topaz Ai .

I have the Tamron 160-600 G2 on my D500.
Had the lens calibrated to the body by Tamron.
Very happy with results. I also have the 100-400 which was also calibrated and gives very good results.I have the 1.4 TC and find it gives
reasonable results.

Years ago I tested my just-arrived Tamron G1 ( purchased just months before the G2 came out). The Nikon was a little little bit sharper but the Tamron gave me about 1/2 f-stop more light at the same settings. Don’t ask me why. The G1 was lighter than the Nikon, and cheaper. The extra weight was the biggest factor. I have not regretted it and didn’t bother buying the G2 when it came out. That’s my 2 cents worth. I would assume the G2 is even better.

[quote=doclrb]Good Morning,

I relied on the 200-500 w/1.4 prior to purchasing the 500 PF 5.6. Whenever this type of question is raised the ‘I never user a TC’ pseudo-elitist false-purists emerge en masse. Reach is reach and there is no substitute. And the high-end fast prime telephotos are simply not realistic purchases for many, including myself. And one cannot always ‘take a few steps closer.’

The 150-600 G2 w/ 1.4 is a touch soft at 840; the 200-500 w/1.4 at 700 less so.

Ignore the anti-TC bias and enjoy either combo! (:

Don't know about the "elitist false-purist" BS But I do know you don't know what you're talking about!! Sharp reach
is good, soft reach is bad! Using a T/C is not the answer! And I say again. I DON'T USE T/Cs But I do get reach using my Nikon D500 with the Nikon 200~500 Zoom! I get 750mm equivalent. Only problem is I lose a lot of the cropping ability that I get when I use my D850 with the 200~500. But I don't need to crop as much, so that's the payoff.
How does that sound coming from an anti T/C biased elitest??? Good Night!
