Some time ago, Cany posted a picture taken in Thompson Springs, Utah. Thompson Springs was at one time served by the D&RGW Railroad, on a line that ran to Salt Lake City. I have always been fascinated by railroads, especially those that operated during the era of steam. I found this on Classic Trains which gives an excellent and interesting history of the D&RGW. Thought that it might be of interest to some others on this board.

Thank you for commenting, Steve! When I was young I was fascinated by trains (still am) and purchased a number of books on trains. I still recall, and this is 70+ years ago, a photo of a train in Colorado (narrow gauge) where the brakemen were running on top of the cars, applying the brakes before the train got to a grade. Could very well have been the D&RGW.

I love Thompson Springs. Was there a few months ago. They are rebuilding some of the structures and bring the town back to life. The cost of living has gotten out of hand in Moab so Thompson Springs is a good alternative is what I was told by a local. Too bad for us photographers but good for them.

Have never been there, but if I ever get to Utah again, I will put it on the list.

GreyOwl,

There are also some of the best petroglyphs you will ever see nearby. It is a very famous panel called Sego Canyon. Well worth the trip.

I have been photographing the Southwestern US for twenty years and have to say southern Utah is the best of the west. It has it all from ancient petroglyphs/ruins, numerous National Parks and small towns like Thompson Springs. In fact I am Co-leading a photography workshop with Master Photographer Lynn Radeka in October. We will be concentrating on Capital Reef NP and it’s surrounding areas. Should be a lot of fun.

Thanks for the article. I hear a lot about this railroad in Model Railroader mag. since it is a popular road to model.
