I am thinking of getting a copy of VueScan for use with my Epson flatbed scanner & also a Nikon Coolscan IV. Does anyone have any thoughts on the product? I have been testing it, and it seems to be much easier to use than the Nikon software. It also has the added advantage that it will also work with the flatbed scanner.
Does anyone know of any discounts available? Thanks

VueScan lets you continue to use your scanner if the original manufacturer no longer provides drivers that work with your operating system. I am able to use my Minolta scanner with W10 even though Minolta stopped updating the driver back in Windows XP.

Not aware of any discounts and have no experience to compare it again working OEM driver.

I use it with my old Canon 9000 flatbed scanner. It's terrific. I've never seen discounts.

I have the Minolta Konica Dimage IV scanner. I tried Vuescan but didn't like it. But with Vuescan installed I can use the Minolta software.

I'm mostly interested in the fact that you mentioned the Nikon Coolscan. What OP do you have it on?

I use Vuescan with my ancient Nikon 4000, Plustek 7600, Epson 500, and Epson ET4850. Having one interface is a blessing. Been using it for many years without a problem. It is constantly updated for free; terrific program!

I have been using VueScan like forever since the world moved beyond the unsupported Coolscan. And then my Epson flatbed also was orphaned and I moved it to VueScan. Luckily I sprung for the lifetime supported version early on. Since then have changed their pricing model and no longer offer that option. They did, however, grandfather that choice and still honor it. Since buying it I have upgraded to a few computers and several versions of Windows. I can’t speak for Apple. Hardware upgrades since the dropped the lifetime license are activated with a trapdoor in the initial logon.

As you have probably noticed its user interface is very down to business, plain and straightforward which I prefer anyway. About a year ago the lamp burned out in my scanner, yes it was THAT old. So I replaced it with a new Epson V850 Pro (No I don’t need that powerful scanner but I wanted it.) which comes with a suite of powerful software but when doing most routine scanning I grab good old VueScan because it is easier and faster for me. Don’t try to teach this old dog a new trick!

If you are asking OS it is for MacOS, Windows and Linix. It installs pretty much independent of OS and seems to be self contained. Does work for new MacOS alledgly.

I bet it is entirely written in c and compiled for the target machine. Except for the license manager and probably TWAIN interface.

If your Epson scanner has Digital ICE, AND you are using a modern Macintosh that supports ONLY 64-bit software, you need SilverFast 9SE. SilverFast 9 versions are compatible with MacOS 13.2 Ventura and M1/M2 Macs.

If your Epson V550 or V600 scanner has Digital ICE, AND you are using an INTEL Mac with MacOS 10.15 or earlier, Epson offers a FREE download of the Mac version of SilverFast 8SE. Go to the Epson support site for your scanner and look for a download link. You will need your serial number.

Epson cannot get a 64-bit update of Digital ICE, because the Kodak subsidiary that wrote it (Applied Science Fiction) is out of business. Their Epson 2 Driver does not include a way to use the infrared dust/scratch removal data from the scanner.

VueScan is wonderful software. Easy to use, great results, and works with LOTS of scanners.
It just works.
It cannot solve the obsolete software problem of things like Digital ICE and things like SilverFast ARE more powerful , but vastly more expensive, and vastly more difficult to use.
Highly recommended

I get much better scans with VueScan than I did with the SW that came with my Epson Perfection V550 Photo.

I seem to think VueScan did utilize the ICE on my coolscan. Alas, MyCoolscan is at my daughters, 2,756 miles west, probably with my 30 year old 80-200 f/2.8. So I cannot confirm nor deny. My daughter does have a new MacBook but has a small collection of adapters to USB C. I think she has a VueScan license.
