Just looked up the fugi xs1 and am very interested...says it is as close to a Dslr as you can get without changing lenses...any thoughts???

For approx $120-150 more than the SX50, it gives just 26x optical zoom compared to the SX50's 50x, plus the XS-1 only has 2x digital for a total of a little over 1200mm. The SX50 has 1200mm with OPTICAL zoom and with the full digital range it extends to 4800mm.... USE A TRIPOD!!

For travel I would recommend you look at a mirrorless camera like the Sony NEX 5R. You'll have the size advantage of a PS with the performance of a DSLR.

I agree with this suggestion. I have this camera as well as a Pentax k5, and I love the little Sony for travel. Photo quality is excellent, and it has lots of features like panorama and HDR. It also has a great zoom lens option.

May be a good choice it you want to carry multiple lenses and keep changing lens. Plus the cost is ultimately a lot higher to get the same OPTICAL zoom range.

After lots of research and input from so many here on this forum, I recently purchased the Canon SX50. As advised here, I went to stores, held cameras, took my own SD card and tried them out. I came home and looked at the photos on my computer to help me make the decision. The responsiveness and the incredible zoom led me to make the choice I did. I love my camera and have no regrets. Research is key, but as a previous poster advised, get the camera soon enough to be familiar with it before your trip.

I agree...my sx 50 came last week and it has a downright amazing zoom...I have only shot on auto so far...but being an old film guy am looking forward to exploring the other options available...

One of the many things I like about the sx 50 is that the digital zoom actually works! However when you crank it all the way out...composition becomes a problem...lol...

Two pics attached show you the difference

full optical

I am planning to replace a Nikon P7000...We are going to Alaska next summer and do travel a lot so my need is a camera for travel, grand kids, and landscapes...I am down to the canon sx50 or the Panasonic Lumix dmc fz200..I also really like the Sony alpha a57 but have never had a Dslr or have had to change a lens...It seems several members are giving up the dslrs for the newer cameras...your thoughts please...

I'm a big Panasonic Lumix fan so I vote for the FZ200 although the zoom isn't as long as the Canon. Panasonic has the f/2.8 across the whole zoom range advantage and Leica glass. I also prefer their very fast and accurate image stabilization and auto focus systems which rarely fail to be perfect. I don't use more than 600mm personally so the zoom is perfect for me. You'll likely spend more time at the other end of the zoom with the huge panoramic scenes you're going to see.

I have the Sony Alpha 55 and it's wonderful but if you're looking for travel convenience and no lenses to change or sensor cleanings to do, the Alpha 57 is not what you want for your trip.

I think I would go for a DSLR. You don't have to carry a bag of lenses, that weigh about 25lbs. You need just one good all around zoom lens for your trip.

I like Canon products, mostly because of how sturdy they are. I bought a Canon Tx film camera in Rota, Spain in the mid 70s. That camera went through 2 motorcycle crashes, one airplane crash, dropped from a wall, in Bermuda, and worked like a charm. Katrina finally took its life, when submerged in flood water for several days.

I would suggest a Canon Rebel, mated with a Tamron 18-270mm zoom, or Sigma zoom of about the same size. The newer cameras have movie mode. The DSLR's will take really sharp photos, and you investment will last for years. You can add lenses as you go. Canon also has a "bridge camera" in the "M" series. You can change the lenses on it too, and they are light and smaller. A adapter is available if you want to buy a full size lens too.

Alaska is a great place for some great scenery, and animals. Bring plenty of mosquito repellent, with Deet.

I recommend and have 2 friends that Swear by it, the DMC-FZ-200. It has a Leica 25-600mm and is constant f2.8, all the way. I have seen some 16x20" prints and they are gorgeous. If you are not professional, and want one camera that does it all, this is it. I believe Amazon just reduced this camera. You can order this and if not happy, I believe you can return it. They are very good on this. BV

That FZ200 is great camera for travel [and more]. I took mine to South Africa having purchased it the day before I left Australia [no time to practice] and it delivered. Let me just say that it showed pin sharp hairs on my leopard at 600
plus 600 [1200]. My kit of lenses for my 7000D will still be used, but not for travel. Too heavy.Too bulky. I think bridge cameras will increase in popularity now that quality has improved so much. If you buy the 200, you will need to print and bind 220 pages of manual. It's still worth it. Note that it also has a viewfinder. Hurrah. Hugs.

I think everyone wants to justify their purchase and certainly nothing wrong with that...I seriuosly considered the FZ

But having lived 20 minutes from Glacier National park for 15 years tells me you want some zoom....a lot of it

Try out the canon sx 50 before you make a choice.

Just a question how many pros shoot with a PS,bridge or any of the other cameras?????? you mentioned the a57 and as I have that i can say it is a wonderful camera and is also cheaper than many of the bridge and other cameras.I am, by the way, 71
and do not find the camera to heavy.

Don't forget to consider the motions available on the LCD screen.
Most of the mirrorless cameras have a fixed screen like a little P&S.
I much prefer the range of motion available on the Canon SX series cameras.
