Never hurts to have a flash just in case.

Put your really smart camera on intelligent auto, take a lot of pictures and have a critical eye afterwards. Good results guaranteed!

Sound like a chance to get intentionally blurred images of the drummer's flying hands.

There no reason to recreate that cliche.

If you need that image royalty free for a poster or web page, just ask an AI image app to deliver a few variations. That shot aint worth getting offa the couch and out the door.

Tonight I learned that I will be photographing my son-in-laws 4 piece jazz band. I believe it will be in pub type of environment. Unfortunately this is to take place tomorrow night in a city 50 miles from where I live. I have no idea what the lighting is or the layout or where I can go. I told him I will do my best but don't expect much since this isn't something I've done before. He understands so there is no pressure and I thought it would fun to try something new. I do mostly landscapes, outdoor stuff and some portraits strictly on a amateur level. I shoot with a D750. The lenses I can take that I thought might fit the occasion are a 50mm f1.4, 16-35mm f4 and a 14mm f2.8. So my question is should I take all 3? I think the size of the room will ultimately determine which lens I wind up using. I hope the 50mm will work best as it's the fastest. I don't think I should use a flash but could take one. With this limited knowledge would someone take a run at some suggestions on a good starting point for the initial camera settings?

If you bring the flash, don’t use it until just before you are ready to leave. Just in case you get asked to leave, or get escorted out.

You have 5 subjects. The whole band and each of the members.

Work from a plan.

Get a wide angle shot that includes an enthusiastic audience. Then get closer and concentrate on each band member from one side, then move to the other side to see how the light changes.

After you have individual portraits, move back and get groups of two, then three, then all 4.

Take advantage of high ISO settings, but change to a lower setting if you can. Stage lighting can be very contrasty. You’ll be doing some post processing.

Actually he wont be doing anything ... other than the PP that youve mentioned.

Whatever else he would have done, he has already done, and changing the past tends to be more than a bit tricky.

Now we all await seeing the results !

Hopefully he rejected all the miserable "advice" heaped upon him and simply applied the basics that he already knows toward just trying his luck.

He was tossed into the deep end wearing ankle weights, so results will certainly meet or exceed expectations.

PS: Show us the results when you get it done.

I don't know how to post the results of my shoot to all those that asked me. At least, one, DirtFarmer will see them. I have to say there was a wonderful response to my plea for advice. Great group of Hoggers. I had a great time and actually enjoyed it as there was no pressure. Had I been hired to do this, I might not say the same thing. I wound up taking over 220 photos from several different angles. The place was packed and rocking so close access to the band was limited. I never would have thought to use ISO's of 6, 8, 10 thousand without your advice and deal with noise in post. Attached are some photos that I think turned out ok. All taken with a 70-200mm f2.8. Colors play havoc but it was expected. Since this was my first time I'm looking for suggestions on what I could have done differently to make the next time better, which I've been invited to do. Thanks Hoggers.

Rest assured that posting your images as a reply to my post still allows everyone else to see them.

Glad you took your long lens. I'd say they are great for a first try.

Dear Wannabe63...Take all three lenses so that you won't be sorry you left the most appropriate one back home. Learn in advance of going, how to get your camera to show you a "histogram" on location and under the performance lighting. When you are in position in front of the band with the lighting you are going to be shooting in, study the histogram. (Your camera and lens initial setting should feature your fastest lens of the three wide open to let in what ever light there is; your shutter speed should start out at 1/250 of a second to stop blurring and your ISO on "auto" to give you enough light to make an image.
If the histogram shows you that you are clipping highlights, manually raise your ISO until you are not clipping any highlights and ignore the shadows. IT IS PROBABLY A CLUB OR A BAR THAT IS SUPPOSED TO BE HALF DARK. Have fun and share only your best images with your son-in-law. Shooter41

Thank you for posting some results, it is feedback like yours that not only helps others but also demonstrates appreciation of those that assisted with advice.

There are 3 ways to post images in a thread. (1) You can use Quote Reply as you did above. That will include a reference to the post you are quoting (although that can be edited or deleted). (2) You can use Reply, which is basically the same except that it leaves out the reference to the post you’re replying to. Both those methods include the link to post an image. (3) You can use quick reply but that does not include the image link. However after you send the post you can edit it (within an hour after you sent it) and the edit window will include the image link.

Method 3 is more involved so it’s probably the least useful way. Method 2 is probably the best if you are sending images to the whole group instead of a particular poster.
