I had read somewhere that there were some political issues: Concorde was built primarily for cross Atlantic trips and reduced travel time very considerably. The US didn't have a supersonic airliner and didnt want to be seen as behind the times technically so excuses were found - noise abatement, primarily, to disallow it's use within US airspace.

I don't know how true that it, but it sounds to be about par for the course.

Noise abatement is a real issue at KTOA, Torrance airport. Need a really steep climb to prevent fines.

The Concorde ran over a wear strip from a DC-10 cowling that was attached improperly which took off just 5 minutes before the Concorde. The wear strip puncture the tire and a piece of the tire hit the fuel tank but didn't not penetrate it but caused the pressure inside the tank to cause a weak point on the tank to burst. It sprayed fuel on the left engine and the engine caught fire. It happened while the plane was still on the runway but it had passed V1 so the takeoff couldn't be aborted. The DC-10 was owned by Continental Airline.

100% correct.

I used to watch the Concord take off from Kennedy at 12 PM daily when I was in college. I had a sound meter with me for a class I was taking, and the reading was 112 dB over 10 miles away.

I remember that my ears did ache when it took off.

True, it was an engine failure but it was not a failure of the engine. A part from a DC10 that took of previously was run over and punctured a tyre. Debris from the tyre spun off and damaged the engine, leading to the disaster.

Air France never made as much (if any) money on the plane as British Airways and when the chance came to withdraw the planes licence it was taken.

Maybe had it been accepted in the U.S. earlier the story might have been different. More planes and more operators would have led to competition and we might have had supersonic passenger transport today. I watched take off many times, always in awe.

I checked the price of a ticket once - 10-12K one way. I would have loved to have flown it, just once.

One problem the Concorde had was that it was a fuel hog, especially considering the small cabin size. I don't think anyone made a profit with it. Noise was an issue too. As far as only one pilot, I don't see that ever happening. The biggest problem with it is the requirement for two people in the cockpit at all times, hopefully to prevent the cases where a single pilot decides he/she wants to die (as happened with the Germanwings plane) and takes all the passengers along for the ride.

I grew up in Flushing and I remember airplanes interfering with our watching tv. I think it was "Idlewild" and "Laguardia" airports but maybe Flushing Airport was another "culprit".

What about the fire caused by a ruptured fuel tank?

It brought the plane down killing all 109 people on board and 4 on the ground.

Some GeeWiz about Flushing Airport:

• Taking off to the south, there is a 6 story apartment building in-line and not far from the end of the runway. So the planes had to gain altitude quickly. Wonder how the residents in that building liked seeing planes coming at them and hoping the plane cleared the building.

• One time there was a big jumbo jet from Europe coming in for a landing at LaGuardia. The pilot of the jumbo jet mistakenly lined up on final approach to Flushing, which had a runway way too short for a jumbo jet to land. At the last minute the pilot recognized his mistake, gave full power, and went around to eventually land safely at LaGuardia.

There was a crash at a small airport in the past year. The plane hit a tall tower which was directly in line with the runway. So much for planning.

A FedEx plane was landing in Austin recently, while a passenger jet was given clearance to take off on the same runway. They came within 150 feet of each other. That has happened several times lately.

This guy is very good. He's a commercial pilot, so he knows what he's talking about. This one got him annoyed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvUOHa8n7aQ
