In May we are off to Italy, Greece and the Holy Land. Then in August, Alaska. I have been stressing over what camera and lenses to take. Then I remembered. About 30 years ago we went to France, Germany, Switzerland, and England and all I had with me was my Olympus XA2 and came back with hundreds of wonderful photos and slides. And then I remembered a very recent trip to Yosemite loaded with cameras and lenses and spending a lot of time changing lenses, lugging around stuff and seeing more of Yosemite through my finder than with my eyes. I missed a lot. Although I will probably take more than an XA2, I will simplify, simplify, simplify. When did it become so complicated? Serious gear for birding, at the shore, in the woods. Simple gear for vacations.

Rent just the OM-1, 12-100 lens, extra battery, and charger. It will be all you will need.

Use your phone for walking around pictures. Use a mirrorless camera with a long lens and one like a 18-135 lens. Everything is covered! This is what I use. A canon R7-100-400 ll lens and a 18-135 lens.

Meaning no offense, these questions amuse the daylights out of me. If you were visiting your home town which lenses/cameras would you take? Whatever your selection you would do the best you could and most likely your photos would be superb. So what difference does it make if now you are talking some city in Europe or Alaska? Most likely you will still take excellent photographs.

Of course it does depend upon whether you are flying or driving. lf driving to Alaska then you would probably take along a long telephoto to capture wildlife far away.

I have lived in Alaska and had no telephoto at the time. I have done cruises and visited numerous cities in Europe and Mexico. At the time my camera of choice was a Nikon D800 with a 24-85 lens. That's it. Photos were wonderful both in cities and on the ship. Recently I have used a Sony RX10IV and have had great success with it. Why burden yourself to carrying tons of lenses when you will probably do well with one or two?

Have a great trip,

Dennis

Years ago we took an SLR with a 35mm lens attached. On my last trip I took my Z50 with the 28mm f/2.8 lens. Ten years ago I took a compact Canon G9 (1 inch sensor, 7.4-44.4mm zoom, 12.9 mega pixels). For the most part, I was generally satisfied with the results. Traveling to new places where I have never been previously, I might be inclined to take the 20-200mm lens with either the Z50 or Z6ii body. I prefer to travel light. different for each of us - take that which makes you feel most comfortable. your intended end use of the photos you shoot may be the best predictor of what you should include on your trip.

Dumb question. Take the gear that you have and are familiar with.

I think it's more of "I don't need all that stuff" as opposed to "what do I take".
He realized that he doesn't need to take along the kitchen sink.

Great, but if we do not know what cameras/lenses he has how can we comment?

Very simple. You generalize.
Exactness is unimportant.
Just share simple ideas.

With due respect does it make much difference what kit he has? Isn't he asking us what we like, not necessarily brand names but types of lenses and maybe cameras.

Well, I suppose you could simply agree or disagree with his statement, and why.
Knowing what equipment he has will only allow you to tell him what you would do with what he has,
or justify why he should take what stuff.

Ideas which are not dedicated to specific equipment, or may encompass all equipment.
