I'm learning how good focus functions can be with a new travel camera. I wonder how long it will be for Panasonic to fix focus capabilities in their M4/3 line.

My Mirrorless Nikon weighs more than my full Frame Nikon Dslr. I keep reading how mirrorless is lighter. Just not sure lighter than what?

Isn’t the A1 mostly for video?
Also , you are right about A7iii being very similar to A7iv.😊

The A1 is Sony's current flagship model and is for all photography with a stacked sensor, superior AF, fast AI tracking, 30 fps, and hybrid video up to 8K, and loads more.

I am a longtime pro Nikon and Canon SLR and DSLR user , over 40 years both brands. . I made the move to Sony mirrorless in January 2017 and have no regrets. It was the best move I have made, personally and professionally.

FYI, i have owned Sony A6500, A7RII, A7RIII, A7III, A9, and currently own Sony A7RIV, A1, A7SIII.

I love what my mirrorless gives me, so many competitive performance advantages that NO DSLR can ever physically have, just a fact. Trading and selling my huge kit of Nikon and Canon gear wasn't as painful as I thought it would be. I did it all through a trusted dealer, and applied it all to my Sony purchases.

Certainly you could do further research and compare the excellent Sony A7IV with other mirrorless. The A7IV is the direct upgrade to the Sony A7III, the best selling fullframe mirrorless camera ever. Doubters, just check the numbers, ok. The runaway success of the Sony A7III is the single camera that forced Canon and Nikon to get serious about fullframe mirrorless themselves.

There is a small learning curve for Nikon and Canon users that moved to Sony, but it isn't that difficult and once you set up your A7IV, they are intuitive to use.

Here just one of the many independent reviews of the A7IV. You can find these independent reviews of most models from each brand.

Mirrorless-designed lenses tend to have newer better optical designs that also benefit from the shorter lens to sensor flange distances in mirrorless cameras, and generally weigh less and are more compact than DSLR-designed comparable lenses. And the latest of them have faster, more modern focus motors.

Sony's E-mount is the most widely produced and most widely used mirrorless lens mount in the world, with over 200 native E-mount lenses available in all price ranges from Sony, Sigma, Tamron, Samyang/Rokinon, Tokina, Zeiss, Viltrox, Yongnuo, Meike and more:

They have been countless threads here in UHH on the advantages of mirrorless over DSLR's :

The top News Services in the World have moved from DSLRs to exclusive mirrorless use in the past 24 months for all their staff photographers and staff videographers worldwide.

Associated Press, UK Press, Canadian Press, all Gannet Media including USA Today, have all moved exclusively to Sony mirrorless. AFP (Agence France Press) helped develop and test the Nikon Z9 and have gone to the Z9 for all their staffers.

With my current A7RIV, A1, A7SIII, I currently own 13 native E-mount lenses covering 10mm to 600mm from Sony, Sigma, Tamron for all my personal and professional work.

I am also a longtime Professor of Photography at a state university, teaching courses in Photojournalism, Digital Photography, and yes 35mm B&W Film photography. My students use all brands and formats of useful gear, SLRs, DSLRs and Mirrorless. They make good photos and videos with both the DSLR and Mirrorless kits we supply for them to use in the courses, but the trend is for them preferring the advantages of the mirrorless gear best.

Cheers and best to you.

It must be the Z9, which is a large and heavy camera. When I got my Z7 I wasn’t surprised how much smaller than my D500 it was, or that it was smaller than my D7200, but I was surprised how close to the size of my M4/3 G9 was.

I own a Sony A7iv. It is quite the beast! My upgrade from the A7lll to the A7iv was professional, and it was well worth it. The A7iv is so fast to focus, and has more options, that it can do, as well as more MP (33 vs 24). But you must understand that you are getting involved in a "system" change in so many ways. You are not only changing from DSLR to "mirrorless", but you are changing from the Nikon logic to the Sony logic. So many people have made that change, so you will be in good company, but be kind to yourself as you climb the learning curve. All of the lenses that are available to you is astounding! You can buy an adapter to use your current Nikon lenses, and set the camera to use just the APS-C part of the sensor. You can buy an LA-EA5 adapter and use any of millions of Sony, Minolta, Sigma, and Tamron lenses that were made for the Sony "A" mount system and have great autofocus. Or you can buy the amazing "E" mount lenses with the fastest autofocus. The journey you are about to take will make you a better photographer, no matter which system you choose. But I can promise you that the A7iv is a totally amazing piece of equipment that will astound you with it's capabilities, and provide more options for growth.

I have posted a UHH thread about this excellent new S5II release from Panasonic, which finally put PDAF into their fullframe mirrorless cameras .

Yes it has gotten many very good reviews, but some reviewers have said that the Panasonic S5II's PDAF system still lags behind the performance of the PDAF systems in Sony, Canon and Nikon fullframe mirrorless.

From all the reviews I have seen, the PDAF system in the new Panasonic S5II is mostly great, but not quite up to what I have in my Sonys. Not for fast action and for zooming lenses. It is very close, but not yet an equal.

As a professional photojournalist in a very competitive business, I need the best AF I can afford. I cant afford to miss any shots.

Sony has by far the most experience in PDAF/CDAF hybrid autofocus systems in fullframe mirrorless cameras . I am sure the next generation of PDAF in the fullframe Panasonic S5II and/or with future firmware updates will improve the S5II PDAF performance.

My advice is to strongly consider the system that has the best proven PDAF performance you can get NOW for your investment , along with several other models in its lineup that also have the best PDAF systems, and has the largest lineup of native mirrorless lenses.

If you decide the Panasonic S5II is your best choice for what you need and how you shoot, that is perfectly fine. It is a worthy choice and I applaud Panasonic finally getting the message here, as IMHO Panasonic had crippled its otherwise excellent previous fullframe mirrorless cameras with no PDAF.

Cheers and best to you.
