Thank you for pointing that out. Apparently "Manglesphoto" didn't know or was totally joking and that's who I addressed my comment to. My trigger finger just was too slow.

Just a note: this entire discussion would have been much shorted if in your original post you would have specified the program you were exporting from. We all could have zeroed in on Photos rather than going down the Lightroom Classic rat hole. Just sayin' rather too much information than too little.

Everyone assumes other people know what you know. For instance, people on this thread have mentioned LrC (and other things), assuming that everyone knows what that means. It means nothing to me. So, I assumed people would know what I was talking about. I don't know what is different between an Apple and a PC. I didn't know PC users wouldn't understand " finder". Next time, I will load my questions with details. Sorry for the confusion.

Yes, this field of digital photography can get rather complicated. While brand X and brand Y may both be the same sort of tool, they call things different names and they do things slightly differently, with slightly different results. So specificity is necessary for clarity.

When I traveled all the time for work, I hated renting American cars, because I've always driven Toyotas. Many of the controls work backwards. When I switched from Canon to Nikon in the late 1960s, the lenses all focused in the opposite direction. I had to "unlearn" Canon focusing!

For decades, I used both Macs and Windows PCs at work. Remembering which one I was using got a bit complicated when I started running WinXP on my Mac via Parallels Desktop. In that environment, you can run both at the same time on the same Mac! Command+Tab would take me round-robin through my running Mac applications, and one of them was Windows. But then Option (Alt) + Tab took me round-robin through my Windows apps. I had a fun time getting used to Control-this and Command-that. But it was worth it to be able to have one machine in my briefcase that did everything.

Companies are notorious for adding to confusion. Adobe threw us all a loop with their switch from Lightroom 6.14 Stand-Alone to Lightroom Classic CC. They introduced a NEW Lightroom CC that is a stripped down, mobile-connected application. Suddenly, "Lightroom wasn't Lightroom" anymore. It is now Lightroom Classic, and I still can't understand why the "new" Adobe Cloud-connected Lightroom isn't called Lightroom Mobile.

No one ever mentioned PSE. And it turns out she was exporting from Photos on a Mac.

Thanks. I realized that after reading further. But now I'm still a bit confused and will check further because I want my exports to maintain their original jpg size...or whatever the psd translates to.

Apple Photos has two Export commands in the menu. You can "Export 1 Photo" or "Export Unmodified Original For 1 Photo" (if you select multiple images, the menu lists how many...)

When Apple Photos imports files, it gives them indecipherable random names and buries them in a container file called PhotosLibrary.photoslibrary. So the "Export Unmodified Original..." is the only way to get them out without doing some tricky surgery on that container file.

Photos is much like Lightroom Classic, in that it preserves your original files and only modifies them on export or when printing, texting, emailing... etc.

jpg, JPG, JEPG, jepg are all the same; just file extensions.

Have no idea was 'finder' is?

Just copy or move your files in the File Explorer.

finder is fully explained in an earlier post.

Computer operating system graphical interfaces all have a file management program.

Window’s file manager is called Explorer

MacOS’s file manager is called Finder

They both serve the same function and do the same things: copy, paste, organize, sort etc.

I am concerned about saving photos to my external hard drives. A photo on the computer says it is 11MB and shows up as a JPG. When I transfer that photo to an external hard drive going the route of "file, export" or through finder, it shows up on my external hard drive as a jpg and with only 3.8MB. If I drag the same photo from the computer to the external hard drive, it shows up as a JPG with the same 11MB as it has on the computer. Am I losing something of the picture by going "file, export" rather than just dragging it? Should I be saving all my photos by dragging them? And, if I drag the jpg from the external hard drive to my desk top, it remains the 3.8MB

What is the difference between a jpg and a JPG? Will there be any difference between prints made from these two shots? Thanks.
I am concerned about saving photos to my external ... (show quote)

Without a bunch of baffle-gab…no difference at all. Cheers!

Not necessarily, if they are PC users. Finder is the macOS name for what Windows calls Windows Explorer.

It's all about compression. may be hard to believe but I still use Bridge because it supports more formats than Lightroom. First, why jpeg? I would use TIFF or PSD to avoid losing any info. Not critical of what you are doing.Hope this helps. I only say things to help not to hurt. Cheers.

Why jpg. For me, I use jpg for sharing our printing. If I use a printer company that wants a different format I will export in that format. You probably file is unchanged on export and the original with edits is still available.

MaryFran, I sincerely hope you have gleaned the assistance you needed. All too often members (especially new or inexperienced) will post questions asking for solutions without providing even basic specifics regarding their problem. That's frustrating to those who would like to help others. One needs maximum information to have the best chance of solving the problem. It's rather like calling your car mechanic and saying: "my car doesn't drive right, how can I fix it?" Couple that with the wide array of experience of Hoggers then throw in a few trolls.

You may already know, but this forum has a number of curmudgeons who delight in throwing darts at other's posts, correcting spelling errors, counting similar best intended responses or being outright onery. If you find an individual member who's comments only provide grief you can block them. Best of luck in your photographic adventures.
