Sometimes, as a photographer, luck is on your side and other times, not so much!

I was shooting an industrial job for a heavy equipment and crane contractor and some bad weather set in, however, the construction crew kept on working. As the sky darkened, the rain intensified, and the thunder seemed to come in closer, I took what I thought was my last shot for the day but seconds later the electrical storm began. The sky and the entire site lit up like a giant strobe. Good shot eh!

So, I drove home, and proudly showed the image to my lovely wife who asked me if I was certifiably insane! She said something to the effect that I, the big shot, is running around a construction site with tripods, light stands, and electronic gear in the middle of an electrical storm- and didn't my mother ever tell me never to run across a field with a pair of scissors during a thunderstorm! It's a good thing I didn't tell her I had a scissor in my Swiss Army Knife- in my pocket- I guess that wouldn't, count. Oh- there was a magnet on my lens shade.

Well, the client did use the shot on the cover of their annual report!

On the original post, is there any way to tell if the image was photoshopped? I ask because I’ve either seen the same image without lightning or one very close to it. I know I’ve seen the image of a similar rare cloud like that one taken in Australia and another one that I think was taken in maybe Nebraska. I think I saw the image so much like this on on the Successful Farming website.

But then again, sometimes people just luck out. A few years back a coworker used her cell phone to get a shot of a rainbow and accidentally caught a lightning bolt in front of the rainbow. I’ve shot enough lightning to know that it is impossible to react fast enough to catch lightning, so you instead use a tripod and bulb setting.

Did a google search and found the story behind the image. Taken in Nebraska by freelance photographer Vanessa Neufeld in 2014.

I saw a similar cloud formation, but without the lightening when at sea many years ago, have a pic somewhere.

With all those nice cranes etc around to act as lightning conductors there was ZERO chance of you getting struck. I wouldn't leave the lights etc. out in the rain though :)
