Wow, you were already a former professor of photography from Purdue at age 12! Impressive.
The difference between “and” and “from.”

I know I have a tripod someplace, but I will be dam*d if I can find it. At this point in my life I don't want to spend an arm and a leg on a new one (I don't use one very much). Is there a market in used ones? What names should I look for.
Thanks
John

John, here is a link for KEH for used tripod legs. They also have tripods with ball heads for sale as well.

Hope this helps. Vince

Why don’t you read your dribble before you send it out and correct your errors. Or is sloppiness just your signature?

I have quite a collection of tripods for different purposes, mostly brought used.
One is very heavy, but will hold my biggest kit rock steady & is quick to adjust.
One will go very low or mount in odd ways (great for macro)
One is compact & ideal for everyday use,
Several table top models have been brought when I've been out of the country & needed something to hold a pocket camera.
One was just brought (for £10) because it had a built in cable release & I'd never seen this feature before!

If you're just after something to hold a normal camera steady for a 2s exposure just about any of these could work, but the first would limit you to within 1/4 mile of the car!

I'll give you a tip about tripods. When you get one you like, decide on a mounting system. I use Manfrotto. I have Manfrotto plates on all cameras and all tripods. You don't have to get the $35 set. There are generics. You don't want to be ready to shoot a scene and find that the camera won't attach to the tripod.

Most of my photography is done with a tripod. I have several and each has its purpose. For long lens work I use a Gitzo systematic as it is rock steady and elevates enough that I don't have to bend over when shooting moons, birds, planes and maybe the occasional superhero. I don't go hiking so I don't need a super light tripod but my favorite for 150mm lenses and under is a wooden Ries model C. My dad purchased it in the 1930s. There is one on ebay right now.

For a head, I use an Arca Swiss ball head that is rated for 90 pounds. I used to use pan-tilt heads and still do on my heavier tripods. Arca Swiss heads are pretty expensive new but I got my 3 used from ebay.

When buying from ebay, the ads seldom give the manufacturers specs so you have to research those from the makers site. My advice is get the best tripod and head you can afford for the type of photography you do.

A good tripod that meets your every need is hard to find, because they can be expensive.
Just keep your eyes open.
My best tripod works well for any (heavy) video camera or SLR. Being able to pan when
using the video is important.

I figure that this tri pod must have cost around $150 when new, but I found it by accident
when walking past a dumpster at a school. The photography department at the school had
stopped giving classes and some (unthinking) instructor, just tossed the tripod in the dumpster.
It was like new.

Just keep your eyes open. Stop in your local camera shop and just ask if anyone wants
to get rid of an old tripod. It doesn't hurt to ask. Happy hunting.

I also have quick mount plates on all my digital cameras and on my two sizes of tripods I use, my "gunstock tubular" brace" and my unipod. So--when you need four or more sockets and a dozen inserts--get the cheapest from China.-----------------ew

Manfrotto- confusing website - but as many have said buy something that can handle a heavier lens if needed. This is expensive but the Italians need the $.

Buy the generic plates on eBay. Some plates are a little longer and the sockets might very a bit. But all the same width and as for strength that is dependent on the single quarter in socket in your camera. Also, of course your camera might not allow for a plate if it covers bottom functions like battery replacement or card removal. That goes without saying. But they are all cheap.------------ew

I got an Email from amazon today that listed several Artcise carbon fiber tripods from under $200 and up. They look well constructed and I have heard only good things about them. here's a link
