“Free” storage that’s included with another subscription is often too small except for sharing files. Typically, you can purchase more. You can do that and tell your backup Ap to mirror the whole C: (or other drive) or parts of it. Tell the Ap to include subfolders if it asks, and it will look exactly like what’s on your computer. The downside is there may be lots of wasted space used by files you don’t really want to back up. I prefer to customize the backup to include a number of items under the user/“my user ID” folder such as documents, program data, favorites, downloads, etc. not a lot of point in backing up Windows to the cloud because you have to already be runnning Windows and a browser to download it. Easier to set restore points.

Exactly, same way that I do with Carbonite for cloud storage and syncback for local.

Several people mention Amazon prime, with unlimited storage storage for photos as a way to back up.IMHO Amazon prime is not a backup system. It's great for creating folders and sharing.

Is the MyCloud website through Western Digital? This sounds interesting as another possible option for me....

Yes it is. FWIW I configured my NAS as a RAID 5 for an extra layer of data security so I’m fairly well protected from a crashed NAS drive.

I access this drive from anywhere I travel. No monthly fees to do this.

Search Western Digital NAS solutions for more info.

I don't think you need to include the OS in your backup. (1) it's too large and will take up too much space on your backup system and (2) it's readily available from online sources.

I'm talking about a recovery back up.

You can recover by downloading the OS. You don't need that in your backup. However, you might want to back up the registry.

Does anyone here who has used Backblaze have a couple of screen shots of the dashboard? I've looked at their website and am very interested in it and iDrive, but would like to see what the Backblaze dashboard / user interface looks like. iDrive shows theirs....thanks in advance!

Here are a couple I just took with personal information blurred out.

Here is the backed up file list. As you can see I have my main iMac hard drive and 3 external drives. You can select files/folders or drives to restore.

Hey guys - I am currently using several external hard drives for my backups. I have lost data before so I am very paranoid about making sure I have several backups of my photos both on my desktop and stored in a fireproof safe. I'm now looking for a good cloud backup vendor. I have about 3TB worth of data and as we travel, that's getting larger. What do you guys use? Looking for something not very complicated that I can backup to and restore if needed and quick / easy access.

I have been using Carbonite for several years.

I found Carbonite somewhat confusing and was never sure if my files were backed up or not. Switched to Backblaze and love it.

Ah, this is excellent!! Thank you so much for taking the time to capture these. I’m between Backblaze and iDrive right now, but I think I’m going to try Backblaze. From what I can tell, it will suit my needs nicely and not cost a fortune. Really appreciate the input from everyone!

Just keep in mind that BackBlaze is strictly a file backup if you have the basic service. You can do file sharing with their upgrade B2 service (I don't use that)

good to know, and yes, I do need to think about that. Probably need some quality time staring at the ceiling before I pull the trigger……

I do have a hub, but apparently not a “good enough” one. There are two USB-A and two USB-C ports and apparently the second one of each doesn’t have enough power to run my disk drive….? My backup drive won’t show up when I plug it in. And yes, I did test my primary drive in the port, also. The first port is fine, the second, not so much….I might take a look at a better hub / splitter / whatever that has more power.

Some are powered, most are not!

iDrive is one of the few (maybe the only?) products that provides both backup (like Backblaze), and folder sync/sharing capability (like Dropbox or OneDrive) in a single product. There are uses for both. iDrive is also one of the few that keeps historical versions permanently. Backblaze charges extra for this important feature.

I have used iDrive for well over a decade....used it with many business customers, done a few restores (both large and small), and can recommend it heartily.

IDrive. Been using them for years. Excellent pricing and options.
