So, you want to CONVERT audio files? It's possible, but only if they have soul.
.flac is the ideal audio format, but there are a few low quality players that won't play them. Rather than converting the .wav files, I'd re-rip to .flac if you're sure your player(s) can handle them. Otherwise you're stuck with the lower quality mp3 (high bitrate, say 320kbps), or replace the inadequate player. .wav is definitely not the type you want.

I have recently started to re-record some of my favorite CDs onto a thumb drive to use in the car instead of carrying several pounds of CDs with me (my last drive was swiped from my car along with a container of spare change).I had been using .wav to burn the music but just noticed that .flac is also lossless, but takes up less space. Can I somehow convert from one format to another or so I need to just scrap what I did and re-rip with .flac? So far I have 6 CDs on the drive ranging from Miles Davis to Star Wars. I use Windows Media Player.

The process is called "ripping" a CD. Converts a WAV from audio file to mp3. I ripped all my CD's years ago and added them to my music files. I play them everyday along with 40,000+ mp3 files that are stored on a dedicated SSD in my PC. I also use mp3studio to download and convert to mp3 YouTube audio files of music videos. Windows media will rip a CD. I also use Express RIP CD Ripper software. It is much faster than Windows Media. I'm sending you a PM.
Good luck,
Mark

Why don't you want *.wav?

Audacity is free and will convert almost anything to anything (but I haven’t checked .wav to .flac files)
That works, I’ve used it for that. Exact Audio Copy is another free program that will convert CD’s to FLAC files. I’ve only done a few 100 that way.

I found out that it takes up a lot more memory space (they are both lossless but .flac files are compressed). I learned that not long ago watching a You-Tube video.

The audio files are stored on drives, - SSD, HDD, flash, ... That is not memory space, but it is storage space.
The necessary storage space is hardly a consideration. I have 43,000 files, most of which are full albums, and they total 245 GB on a 2 TB dive. That's approximately 12% of the drive.

I need to figure out, at some point, what you do. The only problem would be playing CD's in my car.
Disregard. Still blearly from last night - this is for video, not audio...
I screwed up. It's a near universal video converter, not audio. Must still be sleeping from last night ☺...
Since my CD player quit working in my living room, I just ripped all my CDs, over 100, to MP3 format so I could play the music using my Apple TV. I used Windows Media Player Legacy, which is free. It does not show as an app on my computer, but you should be able to access it by putting "Windows Media Player Legacy" in the search bar on your computer.
You can set up rip specifications to several formats. Worked fine for me.

My car will play .mp3 files from a thumb drive. Maybe yours will. There are dozens of free mp3 rippers available. I use CDEX.
