If you’re referring to Amazon S3 (and not some other Amazon service), it looks exactly like a blank disk. You can create any folders/subfolders you like, or if you prefer, you can copy your entire data folder and it will create the same subfolders so it will look exactly like your existing drive - no difference between it and starting with a blank external disk for backup.

Amazon photos backs up my photos automatically, but no folder structure. Drive used to, by it shuts down tonight at midnight.

Amazon photos Sierra by date after uploading. The one I have is the unlimited with prime. I'll have to see if I can figure out how to upload director structure.

s3 is a paid service separate from prime, which is not a good backup service. I use Carbonite for that, I have Amazon prime. I got out for the free shipping and the movies.

As you say, Amazon S3 is a paid Cloud service and the largest cloud provider in the world - there’s a reason for that.

You're on the right track. If you lack a cloud backup, you're not backed up.

The "fireproof" safe is useless. Any electronics inside such a safe will be destroyed in a real fire.

Backup consists of:
1) local disk(s) run daily or in real time by proper backup software that saves historical versions.
2) offsite backup (cloud) that syncs your data files in real time and again, stores historical versions of your files.

Backup is serious business, and it's complicated. You have to devote some time to understanding what backup software does, how it should be setup, what file versions are and why they matter, what to backup and what not to bother, monitoring those daily backups over time to be sure they're happening, and testing the restoration process from all of your backup types, local and cloud.

This ain't "set it and forget it".

I do have a hub, but apparently not a “good enough” one. There are two USB-A and two USB-C ports and apparently the second one of each doesn’t have enough power to run my disk drive….? My backup drive won’t show up when I plug it in. And yes, I did test my primary drive in the port, also. The first port is fine, the second, not so much….I might take a look at a better hub / splitter / whatever that has more power.

My splitter has a power plug

Carbonite has basic things it backs up by default, and you can add folders or only certain files within folders (not the whole folder) if you like.

One more question for you guys using Backblaze - my photos are on an external hard drive. Any problems using Backblaze with an external drive? Their website says they support external USB drives, but would like to hear if any of you have used one. Thanks!

I use Backblaze. It backups my two external hard drives plus my Mac. As others have said, initial backup is slow, took almost 4 months, but
after initial backup it’s not even noticeable. Their support is excellent. It gives. Me total peace of mind

SpiderOak ONE https://crossclave.com/one/

I have used this for decades, without any loss of data. You can sync files to multiple computers, even if they use different operating systems.

I set up a Western Digital NAS drive at my home. It has four 4 GB drives. When I’m away, I access that drive via the MyCloud website. I backup, download photos, show other folks photos directly from the NAS while visiting. It’s awesome!

But that doesn't address the wide distribution found in a cloud system.

I've been using Carbonite for years.
Haven't need to restore anything yet.
I like the way it "dots" the files and folders with a backup status, and I can say "Back this up as soon as possible" for new stuff. But new stuff is backed up rather quickly without requesting ASAP.
With any cloud backup, it will take days depending on how much you have to backup and your internet speed.

I have read about a service that will ship a loaner hard drive to you so that you don't need to download your backup files from the cloud which could take a considerable amout of time. I wish that I could remember the name of the service but cannot. Perhaps another hogger can help with this.

Is the MyCloud website through Western Digital? This sounds interesting as another possible option for me....

Hey guys - I am currently using several external hard drives for my backups. I have lost data before so I am very paranoid about making sure I have several backups of my photos both on my desktop and stored in a fireproof safe. I'm now looking for a good cloud backup vendor. I have about 3TB worth of data and as we travel, that's getting larger. What do you guys use? Looking for something not very complicated that I can backup to and restore if needed and quick / easy access.

I have tried several and finally settled in with iDrive, which has been an excellent solution for me. Simple, and easy to understand. Fast responses to my technical questions. It stays out of your way and delivers a simple message to your desktop every morning about what was backed up overnight. When I am away from my computer, I can quickly see my backup on my phone and download any files I might need on the go. And they will back up your phone if you want them to.
