You poor thing. We have 4 children. We made them grow up, Kicked them out of the house and get married. Oh, and made them get their own homes.

This is the second time around for both of us, so all the the kids are long grown and gone. At least we decided on combining our worldly possessions into my home and selling hers. Otherwise I have no idea what would have happened to my collection, now safely boxed and stored in my/our basement.

I think you are the only person I have heard of that extends their under tree train to the whole room- wow, what a lot of work to get that all set up and lit up. Thanks for posting. How do you keep all the trains so pristine looking. I am just starting to clean everything on our American Flyer (S gauge) 12 x 15 ft layout that has been in this space for 13 years and really needs a deep cleaning effort.

Thank you!. What is shown in my post is relatively simple. There are folks out there that go all out on their Lionel and American Flyer during Christmas. I am talking about the original buildings, bridges, working cranes, etc... I have seen some of these Christmas layouts on Youtube. As for keeping them pristine, it's easy. They are out of the box for only a couple of weeks. I keep the boxed items in covered cartons.

My New Year project is to clear a 6’ x 18’ foot space in the basement to start constructing bench work for a new layout. While continuing to clear out stuff so it can grow. There’s going to be numerous stealthy trips to the dumb .

Good! you're getting there. You also nailed a key point; with room to grow. Good for you!

Go to the pet store and get a few white mice to ride around on the trains.
Good idea but that won't work. 2 things: #1. The cat is extremely stupid. #2. The cat is de-clawed.

My wife will be understanding only for so long. You see, half of our finished basement is filled by an H.O. layout. One of our gardens in the front yard is occupied by a garden railroad (the backyard is off limits).

So, a compromise had to be struck. I have a ton of Lionel trains and the only time that I am allowed to run them is at Christmas time and originally, around the Christmas tree.

Well, the collection kind of grew. And grew. And grew. What was I supposed to do? I just couldn't leave them in the attic. We can no longer put presents under the tree. Entertaining in the living room is no longer practical.

Fortunately there are no weapons in the the house. I was trying for a record of 6 separate tracks (I can do 11) but for health reasons, I decided to back off.

I'm still here.

My wife loves me.

That looks like a lot of fun! I bet she plays with the train set when you are out of the house.

Yes, it is. The fun part is when people come over. They can't believe it. And of course they want to see it run. Oh, and I have checked; If she has run them, I can't tell. Not that I would mind. Lol.

Tree (and trains) up the Friday before Thanksgiving and down the Saturday after Easter???

My layout had to come down when my son became a Cub Scout. My wife signed him up. Oh, you're the assistant Den Leader? Great! What???? I'm the den leader? 14 boys???

It was great. I stayed with the program until my son became an Eagle Scout. In the end, we had 18 boys in the small town troop and we developed 14 Eagle Scouts. I'm back involved with my grandson, who is on his way as well.

Sorry to hijack the thread tainkc.
