Do what you want and not them. You can get beat up on here sometimes asking for an opinion

82 and I'm with you! Love means 200- 500.
Great that you are still shooting at 79. Do what works for you.

Guess I'm not too exceptional. Only 83.
I used to carry my 200-500 around on my D4 or D5 and never considered it particularly heavy. Now being retired I don't shoot as many events as I used to but the 200-500 is still in my bag. I usually have my 24-70-200-500 with me.
I usually just carry it and the camera by the foot. It's not the most comfortable handle but it works for me. I gave up the shoulder strap 15 years ago because it was always getting in the way. I just carry the camera by hand. If I need both hands for something I bend my elbow and put the lens in there and press it against my body. That holds the camera and gives me some use of both hands.
Amen Brother ... at 82 I'm lugging my Nikon D7000 with it's 200-500mm as part of my work out. Keep up the good attitude.
Good for you....I am also 75....two weeks ago I sold all my Nikon gear..including the 200-500...I got a Z9 and z6ii...I also got 6 Zk lens and the Sony 200-600 with the Medap mount so I can use it with my Nikons..I am also a avid drone flyer..
I play golf 5 days a week and still
barefoot waterski a few times a month..
NO RECLINER FOR ME!!!!

I have the cotton carrier vest and it works great. I carry Canon rebel 77D and my Tamron 150-600 lens and it's perfect. Leaves both hands free and you have quick access.

I am a long-time Nikon shooter. I did purchase the Nikon 200-500mm lens and really liked it. Yes, it is a heavy lens. I started reading articles about having to lug that huge lens around ALL DAY LONG, and what a burden it was. So, I got rid of it. Lately I have been thinking, I don't go out shooting ALL DAY LONG, at most I am out shooting 4 hours (I am 79 years old). If I cannot carry that lens on my Nikon D7500 camera for 4 hours (at times with the use of monopod), then I need to resign myself to my recliner. I will be getting my Nikon 200-500mm lens this Thursday, can't wait. I need to stop listening to the "pros" and remember I am just a enthusiast!

I am 79 and use an old baby jogger that I bought for $5.00 to push my gear around. The ripped seat is not an issue as my camera bag covers the rip! I use it for my 500mm f5.6, monopod and wimberley monopod head.
The 200-500mm f/5.6 is my favorite accessory for a D500. Many have chosen to move to the 500pf, which is a great lens, but I prefer a zoom, especially for birding. I usually take my 600mm f/4G along with me birding, but use a toddler jogging stroller to hold my photo backpack and tripod. Much better than nursing a sore back.

I also have both the 200-500 and the 500 PF. I consider the PF a great lens and easy to carry/hand hold. A bit more $, but there are used around and the is $300 of until the end-of-year. Best of luck to you all.

Maybe carrying that lens & camera has kept you in good shape. :-). Congrats!
I carry my gripped Nikon D500 with an attached Tamron 150-600mm G2 quite comfortably with a Peak Design "slide" strap across my chest and ready to shoot In a nanosecond. Also it's tripod ready with an additional arca plate inabout 10 seconds, though I usually shoot hand held 99% of the time. This strap is an excellent value at around 65 usd IMHO. BTW, I'll be 79 in February (YIKES!!!)
