I took a walk in the local preserve today and took a few bird shots. Although they are not the best they will have to do as the day was cold and grey skies. What am I doing wrong........Something seems to be lacking
Blue skies are forecast for the weekend
Thanks for the help

With white birds like Egrets underexpose( I usually use -2 stops ), with dark birds like eagles or darker go the other way. Use single focus point and shoot in spurts using AF Servo for Canon. JMTC

Willie….. I’ll try spot metering however with birds constantly moving and in flight is one reason I usually use matrix metering. Definitely forgot about using exposure compensation. Thanks

When I see a very white subject against a darker background i know my metering pattern needs to change or i need to compensate for the camera's programed response to make the dark background a medium gray which will burn out my subject. I usually just cut the exposure by a couple of exposure steps and peep at the result to confirm I got close. Practice will payoff over time.

Jim, I only use spot metering on static birds. For BIF’s I use 9 point focusing and just adjust metering as needed.
