Part of the problem is that "United States of America" came about in 1793. I sometimes like to ask what government existed before our present government. But I will let the gremlins sleep off the Egg Nog until the celebration of old Christmas. Many don't understand that the Federal Government is the entire USA. The states are not States in of themselves. I am a naturalized citizen of The United States of America. I came from across the "pond".

Yes, the federal government is the entire United States, but individual states still have a lot of self determination. The founding fathers included the 2nd amendment so that the populace could defend themselves from not criminals, but our own government. The National Guard is technically part of the federal military, but is under each state’s governor. Again to allow states to protect themselves from the federal government. And individual states can pass laws or regulations that are more stringent than the federal regulations. Our founding fathers were smart enough to know that we need to be able to protect ourselves from ourselves.

And it’s people like you that provide our country with a continual influx of energy, intelligence, work ethic and the desire to better themselves. More often than not, the immigrants are the cream of the crop because they wish to better themselves while the bums and loafers are happy to stay home and do nothing.

Before our Constitution went into effect, we were under the Articles of Confederation.

The 'nickname' for the second amendment is the "Julius Caesar law", because the founding fathers were well versed in History. As a country, we came close to seeing why, but we are not out of the woods yet.

PS., States cannot pass laws that counter federal law (aka Law of the Land). There is that thing called "eminent domain" that some 'legislators ' insist on forgetting. There is a reason why the National Guard are under the auspices of the USA DoD. But that is too technical for this venue. A couple of years in Constitutional Law should be a requirement for graduating out of high school.

Yep. A totally different rule of government. And the Declaration of Independence has nothing to do with our current form, other than to state the reason for the onset.

What does eminent domain have to do with anything?

In it's annual search of terms that might be offensive to SOMEBODY, Stanford University has determined that the term "American" might be offensive to those individuals who were not born here yet are U.S. Citizens. This could have some profound affects on our society and literature. For instance, Amerigo Vespuci would now be referred to as U.S. Citizen Vespucci, despite the fact that he was Italian. Lee Greenwood's song would now become "I'm proud to be a U.S. Citizen." American Indians would, ofc, be Native U.S. Citizens. We'd have the U.S.Citizen Flag, the U.S. Citizen Baseball League. I guess America the Beautiful would become United States the Beautiful. Doesn't have quite the same ring to it. Of course the movie The Ugly American would become The Ugly U.S.Citizen. Citizen Cane would not be affected, ofc.

Let's just hope Stanford's "suggestion" doesn't catch on and we can all remain Americans.

To tell you the truth, my Italian Grandparents were more than proud to say that they were Americans once they became citizens.

My mother was born in Bialystok, Poland. She lived a modest life as a teenager. She spoke Polish and Yiddish during the occupation. When the concentration camps were liberated, she immigrated to Israel because it became a nation. She was required to speak Hebrew as part of her citizenship. She had become a Nurse at the Shaare Zedek hospital in Jerusalem. She came to this country to continue working as a nurse. A requirement of her citizenship was that she spoke English. She was vary happy to be an English speaking American Citizen. She proudly supported this country and I have no problem hanging an American Flag on my front porch. I’m glad to be an American

This and the "World Series" of Baseball; or the Superbowl winners being the "world champions". We tend to be a bit arrogant. Being called an United States of American is just kinda wordy. I like the term United Statesman. Let's go with that.

No, states cannot pass laws counter to Federal law, although states legalizing marijuana is exactly that. However, a state can institute laws or regulations more stringent than a federal law or regulation.

A good example of what I said was California Amendment 3 (I think that’s the right number), which requires a given amount of living space for confinement animals in that state, but also prevents importation of eggs, milk, pork, etc, from other states unless California requirements are followed in the producing state. That one is headed for the Supreme Court because one state cannot impose its laws or regulations upon another state, which is exactly what California is trying to do.

As for eminent domain, privately owned businesses are trying to pull that here with a for profit electrical transmission line. Public utilities can condemn property if certain requirements are met.
