I have noticed (around here at least) the trend of photographers is to favor Nikon cameras over Canon or other brands.
The irony is that they are not even using the top models but rather a basic cropped sensor model.
Is this an indication of better quality or just minimal budget.

Market share makes no difference. All the major manufacturers make useable cameras. They vary in resolution, image size, video capability, and menu arrangement. The latter is one of the more important in my mind.

Actually, the ownership of Nikon to other brands is significantly related to higher IQ by Nikon owners. For years Nikon out costs other brands and Canon flooded the market for young inspired would-be photographers and companies who bought the cheaper Canon's for their working-class staff.

The average profile of a Nikon shooter was a successful, educated and informed photographer, looking to capture the best possible photos (Pulitzer class) regardless of the cost of expensive Nikon lenses and bodies.

That trend continues as smart photographers continue to buy up used Nikon equipment or reach for Flagship models that are immediately listed on a major recall.

If you believe all that, it is possible a time warp or black hole has occurred, and we are actually on April 1st.
Actually, the ownership of Nikon to other brands i... (show quote)

I'm glad I read this to the end!

You seem to have me confused with someone else in your over-vivid imagination. I regularly and repeatedly suggest various Nikon models, and Nikon in general, as the best solution to various people asking 'what' to buy.

He does, Paul is very magnanimous...and I like what he has to say about Canon as well.

I also shoot Canon and Nikon. I have shot Canon for 50 years and Nikon for far less. I like both my Canon and Nikon cameras and I have absolutely no need to put down a brand or manufacturer just to validate my purchases.
You say Nikon is better by far. Better by far than what? The images I get from my Canon's are just as good as the images from my Nikon's and Canon's are simply easier to use. Granted, I'm somewhat of a collector, though not so much now that I'm retired. The last Nikon I bought was my D850, and I still use it regularly. The last 2 cameras I bought were a Canon R5 and an R7, both really nice cameras. I looked at the R3 but decided I really have no need for one, besides, they are fairly expensive.

Bottom line, Canon makes excellent cameras and Nikon makes excellent cameras, as does Sony and many other manufacturers. Canon is not better than Nikon and Nikon is not better than Canon. It's a personal preference...

It's a bit lower, but still north of 45% global, making Canon's market share bigger than Sony and Nikon combined.

Tks for the correction.

I sometimes think the whole mystique of Nikon cameras has more to do with Paul Simon than any specific features of the Nikon products.

I don't know but I wonder how can it be if Nikon is selling fewer cameras than Canon and Sony?

It would be interesting to see the stats of the big "used gear" sites. I know, personally & especially in this economy, buying good quality used or refurbished product makes more sense than retail.

That’s funny coming from one of the top squawkers. It’s the Canon fanboys that feel the need to denigrate other brands while they beat their chests about how good cameras are that most of them don’t actually own.

It's OK man, I have challenged him to a shoot off several times, and he has declined every time, and that tells you every thing you need to know about him. He is just a talking head, that is all he ever will be.
I ignore his posts now and never respond, he is just hot air with nothing to show for himself.
So I just leave the hot air bag inflated and floating in internet space.

Speaking of cameras, I don't use the top of the line of any brand. I can't really afford it. I have only had one new, digital camera and that was an Olympus I bought from the Online PX at the time I retired from the military on my 60th birthday in 2000. I paid a thousand bucks for it. I later bought a Canon and a Nikon used from KEH. I recently gave the Canon to one of my granddaughters and I had to replace the Olympus with a used one from KEH. They all take good pictures. Brand really ain't no big thang.

This forum is a fair cross section of photographers generally. Numerically less expensive consumer oriented cameras far outsell flagship or enthusiast models. That is reflected here. By and large the quality of work shared by others in the gallery and sub groups also runs at average levels.

You do no favors by inciting discussions as to brands. No one asked Picasso what brand of paint he used.

Neither did they ask what brand of brush he used.

Current technology has crept into probably every make, brand and model of camera out there so only the results we see here are important. Constructive criticism of photos is as helpful as advice on how to adjust settings or lighting angles to perhaps improve the end result. But, those comments are the thoughts of the person stating them at that time on that particular day, relative to that person's expertise and experience with photography.

I was given a 35mm camera in the mid '60's which took good photos when it was set correctly. It was a Japanese Lacon fixed lens and in the right hands it was an ok camera.

Along came a friend with a Nikon FE and 3 lenses for what I guessed was a good price, so I bought it $250.00. Then I got on the kick of if you have the latest and greatest camera and Lenses you TOO can be a great photographer. Got a Nikon F3 and two f2.8 and one f1.4 lenses. Same photos as with the Lacon. Then a Nikon F4 and a couple of new lenses. Same photos as with the Lacon. A New Nikon F5 pictures improved a bit with autofocus, otherwise about the same as with the Lacon.

Oh yes along the way I acquired a few other Nikon cameras and lenses which friends didn't want anymore.

Bought an early Sony digital that lost part of the screen view. It took photos about the same as the Lacon.

The Nikon D100 came out so I bought one. Then the D200 and then the D300.

I finally figured out, I can be very dense, that I really should have spent some time and money on schooling in photography.

I still revert to the Nikon F4 & F5 for film and/or the D200/D300 for digital. If I find my skills have improved beyond the capability of those 4 cameras, I just might upgrade.

With the lenses and cameras being Nikon, that is why I stayed with NIKON. Those other camera makes would most likely take photos about the same as the old Lacon as do my Nikon's.

The Lacon? I am not sure what happened to it, maybe the EX has it
