This forum is a fair cross section of photographers generally. Numerically less expensive consumer oriented cameras far outsell flagship or enthusiast models. That is reflected here. By and large the quality of work shared by others in the gallery and sub groups also runs at average levels.

You do no favors by inciting discussions as to brands. No one asked Picasso what brand of paint he used.

Thats because they made their own .

You really think it matters all that much what brand photogs use? That's a high school Chevy vs. Ford argument.

I never said anything about it mattering I was just asking for options based on what I have personally observed for myself this season.
Next year it might be directly opposite but I'm trying to establish the mindset that makes a person choose a brand especially since so many people are adamant about defending their preferred brand.
Me myself I use whatever system I have in my hand at the time whether it is my recent Sony or my antique 35mm zenith camera.

I have noticed (around here at least) the trend of photographers is to favor Nikon cameras over Canon or other brands.
The irony is that they are not even using the top models but rather a basic cropped sensor model.
Is this an indication of better quality or just minimal budget.

Most of the questions and suggestions for purchase are for Nikon, Canon, and Sony. Yet there are larger and smaller formats.

The larger formats tend to be the heavier, larger, more expensive cameras and equipment and tend to be had by photographers doing more professional work. Yet they are not promoted as much on this site, other sites, and stores.

The smaller 4/3rds cameras and equipment are the lightest, smallest, and least costly systems available. Yet they are not promoted as much on this site, other sites, and stores also.

So the mainly comes down to history, brand familiarity, and format familiarity. How many photographers have heard of the legacy of Leica, Nikon F-1, and Hasselblad? And the competition between Nikon and Canon during the later film days. And Nikon and Canon resting on their laurels as Sony, Olympus, and Panasonic moved to the technology of mirrorless. Both Nikon and Canon have had a lot of sales of their cameras/format and lenses over the years. And they have accommodated their changes when they could with adapters. This has helped them to compete with Sony's technology push into the camera market.

So how many people in this world have not heard of Nikon and Nikon's legacy? How many people in this world have not known the term "35mm camera"? As far as "just minimal budget", 4/3rds can easily beat Nikon. This is why I say that it mainly comes down to history, brand familiarity, and format familiarity.

LOL - the market, rather than UHH, says people prefer Canon digital cameras at a rate of 4.7 Canons to every 2.2 Sony to 1.8 Nikon.

But certainly, just reading the UHH squawk box, one would think the numbers are 8 Nikons to 1 each of Sony and Canon.

That’s funny coming from one of the top squawkers. It’s the Canon fanboys that feel the need to denigrate other brands while they beat their chests about how good cameras are that most of them don’t actually own.

I shoot Nikon, but it is primarily nostalgic & practical reasons.

I come from a family of photographers, my grandfather did it as a hobby, my dad was a combat photographer in Korea, my uncle was a portrait photographer. When I was first getting interested in photography (early 1970s) my uncle Ron gave me one of his older cameras (a Nikon FT), and that is what I learned on. Over the years I accumulated several lenses and when I finally got interested again, a Nikon seemed the natural choice. Unfortunately the FT got destroyed in a house fire several years ago, but I still have the 2 Leica M3's that I inherited from him, and the Minolta Autocord & Kodak A3 from my grandfather.

You might want to wipe off your screen and read again. Nothing but facts above, and no denigration. It's the market that has rejected Nikon, no matter how much the chatterers on UHH want things to be otherwise.

For beginners, two-lens kits are attractive. Nikon has some of the least expensive entry-level two-lens kits, both among DLSRs and among mirrorless...

DSLR two-lens kits...

- Only Canon's T100 or T7 with EF-S 18-55mm and EF 75-300mm is cheaper.
- Nikon D3500 with 18-55mm DX and 70-300mm DX is the next model in price.
- However, the Nikon is out of stock a lot of places, while the Canon kit is widely available.

Mirrorless two-lens kits...

- Canon's M200 and M50 Mk II kits with EF-M 15-45mm and EF-M 55-200mm are cheaper. However, it's widely known that Canon's M-series cameras will likely be discontinued in the near future and there are very limited lenses available in that system.
- Nikon Z30 with 16-50mm and 50-250mm lenses is only $50 more than the M50 kit above.
- Nikon Z50 with the same lenses is an option to step up to for add'l $200.
- Sony's ZV-E10 w/ 16-50mm & 70-300mm lens costs an add'l $550 but doesn't even have a viewfinder.
- Canon, Sony and Fujifilm don't even offer two-lens kits with their more upscale models.

All the above are APS-C format. There are some more affordable Micro 4/3 format kits from Panasonic and Olympus/OM.

Here on UHH you would think everyone shoots with full frame. Nikon also has some of the more affordable full frame, both DSLR and mirrorless.

In spite of all this, in terms of global digital camera market share, Nikon slipped to third place behind Sony three years ago.

2018 global digital camera market share:
- Canon 40.5%
- Nikon 19.1%
- Sony 17.7%
- Fujifilm 5.1%
- Olympus 2.8%

2019 global digital camera market share:
- Canon 45.4%
- Sony 20.2%
- Nikon 18.6%
- Fujifilm 4.7%
- Panasonic 4.7%

2020 global digital camera market share:
- Canon 47.9%
- Sony 22.1%
- Nikon 13.7%
- Fujifilm 5.6%
- Panasonic 4.4%

2021 global digital camera market share:
- Canon 45.8%
- Sony 27.0%
- Nikon 11.3%
- Fujifilm 5.9%
- Panasonic 4.4%

All camera manufacturers have seen a dramatic drop in camera sales since it peaked in 2009. The "pie" they are dividing up among themselves is a lot smaller than it was 13 years ago! That's the camera phone effect. Nikon was particularly hard hit, as one of the leading manufacturers of point-n-shoot cameras, which is the category that's seen the biggest drop. As one of the first and most aggressive developers of mirrorless cameras, Sony has seen the most benefit from the shifts in the marketplace. Even so, note that Canon's global camera market share is roughly equal to the next four manufacturers combined. If you add up those top five in 2020, they account for 93.7% of the global camera market. All the other manufacturers share the remaining 6.3%, including Hasselblad, Leica, Pentax/Ricoh, Olympus/OM, Sigma, Polaroid, Kodak and several others.

I must not fit in the model. I shoot with both Nikon and Canon, and Canon, to me, is slightly better. Nikon is better by far.

DXO is a subsidiary of Sony/Nikon.
They base their reports on purely subjective parameters.
PS Canon far outsells Sony and Nikon. So why is it the by far preferred camera system if it is so crappy?
Also lens rentals put out the most lenses and cameras rented and again Canon was far ahead and Nikon was virtually not even represented.

I can find nothing about DxO being a subsidiary of anybody. They regularly work with all camera brands prerelease to make improvements.
Justin Bieber far outsells many more accomplished musicians, why does he outsell them even though he’s clearly crappy?
And doesn’t it make sense if Canon sells more cameras that more would be renting Canon lenses?

A few short years ago I bought a Sony a99II that had a full frame sensor with 41.4 mp's. it cost me over three grand.
It is very sensitive to light and I rarely need a flash.
I put on a 28 to 300mm lens and have wonderful experiences with the pictures that I take all over the world.
I did just buy a fixed lens camera - a Sony RX10IV. It has a cropped sensor and it's mirrorless.
It does pretty good but when out traveling I still stick to my Sony a99II for really great pictures.

I can tell that this guy would just love to jump onto the photographer and play for hours A top-level shot for sure 🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆
