welcome and congratulations on getting the Nikon 3100, I just bought my wife one this past week. When you take a shot, try different settings, you may not see much difference on camera but when you load it on the computer you will notice the details. Compare the similar photos to the camera settings and pick what you like and record those settings as a jumping off point on your next adventure, again vary your settings.
