Does anyone have a designated beneficiary for their photos, someone who who will know where they are, who will access them, how they will access them, who will care to access them? They’re not like cherished albums of prints in the closet. Some of us have thousands of photos stored for posterity. I have a couple thousand of what I consider "family" photos that I’m going to copy off for my two daughters into folders organized by year, but the rest may only have value to me. I’d like your thoughts about what your own general expectations are.

My kids know where my photo books are.

So, we(grandma and grandpa) took each of our three grandsons on their own trip at age 10ish.
1st one to DC 5 days, 2nd to DC, Bush Gardens and Williamsburg, 3rd to Niagara Falls and Lake George. After each trip I printed about 80 photos 4x6 and made an album for them. (the last 80 printed at Walgreens cost $11.00)
I'm 66, hopefully I have some time to go through all the family photos and print a few hundred for each grandson, our son and our daughter, put them in some albums and leave them in the house to be enjoyed now and taken when we are gone. I will put names on the covers so they go to the intended loved ones. Everything else is in shoe boxes from years ago and on hard drives by my computer, what ever becomes of those so be it.

The basketball photos that I give to the local college were on DVDs two years ago with no problems. This year the first two games I shot I put on DVD also. Come to find out there are no DVD drives in any of the college's current computers. I ended up buying some inexpensive USB flashdrives from Amazon to use. CD/DVD drives are on their way to wherever the floppy drive went.

I had some VHS tapes and Super 8 movies converted. They came back on a flash drive.
All cloud transfer next, otherwise it may simply be a different little widget.

I was expressing these same concerns to my neighbor. I have thousands of prints, negatives and slides that date back 50+ years. Plus about 20,000 digital images. My son doesn’t have any interest in them, though he might when I’m gone. So, what to do? My neighbor says to not worry, nobody beside me cares about them anyway. So, why worry?

Maybe a project for winter… parse the piles!

Who has the desire or time to sort through 20K photos?
How many are virtual duplicates of each other?
Example, 1 shot of the Eiffel Tower, well composed is plenty and likely looks similar to the millions of shots publicly available.
No one except the shooter wants to see more than one shot, if they are being honest and not just being polite.

I read not long ago that every person should have a good friend that will reformat their PC for them should they die. Some how I thank that is good for everyone!

Agreed, completely! Yes, there are many “duplicates”… actually, many images from “burst mode”. Need to purge all those extras. And, many are from events, in which we had multiple cameras in use. So, lots more to purge, as most are no longer useful. But, I rather have too many to choose from, than wish I had that other viewing angle, camera setting, lens, etc..

Agreed 100%...that's why last year I lobbied UHH Admin for a Birds section, and it was thankfully created...it freed up the Gallery from a bazillion photos of Birds that all look the same. I also lobbied for a FLOWERS section, for the same reason, but it has not yet been created...hopefully one day, he'll create a FLOWERS section.

My daughters wanted mine we talked and settled on organizing them so they understand the organization. And then giving each of them a 4TB external ssd with the photos on the drives - my photos are stored on the cloud using IDrive which my oldest daughter uses. Every year I update their photo drive with new photos

I agree with Jerry, most of my photos will be of no interest to others. If you are taking photos of family etc. that would be different but who wants to see wildlife or just general photos which I have thousands of?

Same here. Slowly, I've accepted that my photographic output will vanish from view after I die. I say so because almost nobody among my family and friends ever even mentions my photography.

I will say that a local medical clinic has hung prints of several of my photographs of the surrounding landscape. On a commercial Web-site, I've posted over 2000 of my photographs. Now and then, a photograph there will receive a like. The mother of a family I took under my wing has a print gallery of my photos of her children. Recently, a lady friend of mine has hung a print of my photo of a deer standing in the grass by my cabin. This smidgen of appreciation pleases me, of course. I live with it.

Meantime, I continue doing photography -- because I must.

My family (and other) photos are in the Amazon S3 cloud and both my sons have the login and PW. Since one teaches photography and is the family archivist, pretty sure the family photos (many of their children) will survive. There are also copies on my main and backup computers (both of which are relatively new/powerful machines) and MDisk copies of the photo directory in my safe.

I’ve pretty much got mine to one drive and organized. My daughter said she was going thru them all and deciding what to do with them.

Great topic for discussion; I have thought a lot about this one, recently. I have designated a family member totake charge of this category of my estate as I am aging now. One idea was to organize my best images into book form and print copies for each member of my family ,but that is limited to only a portion of the total package. While the book-idea is a great holiday gift it could be expensive to those of us on limited incomes, now.

I will be curious to see what others have to say as I read further ,those responses yet head of mine.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to All.
