For basketball, I've seen a few shots with motion blur (high school level) and now that you mentioned the 1/3rd stop speed increase to 1/1250, I may try it at my basketball games tonight along with a custom white balance using my 18% grey card (I have expodisc's which would work on my 70-200mm but not my 300mm).
