You’re clearly far more computer literate than I so I might have to call in a pro. But it seems the backup drive is step one. Thanks for the guidance
External hard drive or newer SSD Drive for back up. Make sure before you unplug external drive or any device to eject properly from your computer. Clouds drive can be helpful too.

SSD drives are still more expensive than the spinning hard drives. You don’t need the increased speed for backup.
Drive reliability is variable so do some research before you buy something. Overall reliability increases with duplication.

I have thousands of photos on my computer so as a non techie when it crashed I feared the worst. Turned out the repair shop was able to save them. Now thinking I should get one of those photo sticks. Any thoughts or recommendations?
THANKS

Forget the photo stick. Go out right this minute and buy two hard drives. Back up everything on your computer to both of them. Do this back up every week and keep those drives in separate places. You need a backup plan not a photo stick.

Excellent suggestion. Some put the 2nd hard drive in a separate location
One of my golf buddies is pretty good with this stuff so I’ll ask him to help. I’m in a little over my head . Thanks for the feedback
You've asked two questions that are asked repeatedly and get many answers: backing up and photo editing.
I recommend doing a search and you'll find multiple answers/suggestions over the last year or two.
Make sure On search you check recent box
To backup my photos, I copy them to an external drive and also to Dropbox. I create the same file names in both places so finding them is easy (as long as I remember the file name). It is not automatic and requires me to drag/drop files to copy them into two places. Dropbox has an annual fee but it is insurance against some sort of home problem - electric surge, fire, flood or just bumping into the drive). Anyway, this works for me.
Just get a NAME BRAND External Hard Drive to backup ALL of your Photos to.
Western Digital my first choice
[ others have their favorites]
Portable drives may be more rugged.
2 or so TB to start with.
If your computer crashes, you just copy the external drive to a new computer .

This is a GREAT idea!
I actually use 2 external HDD, one for work and 1 for Backup.
Physical separation is a great idea as well.

Well I’m not all that computer savvy but it’s obvious the photo stick isn’t the answer. Any photo editing program you like?
I suggest that you create a file system INDEPENDENT of your editing software so you will know where your photos REALLY are!
Also extremely helpful in backing up the photos .
