Yup! UPSs are great for glips and brownouts!
Gives one time to save data and do an orderly shutdown.

I concur and I have had one for years.
I recently installed a new one. We lose power around here just a few times a year.
However, it does give me time to perform an orderly shutdown.
An electrical engineer friend told me that true sine wave (unclipped) power sources are much preferred for some applications.

Some device power supplies are built more robustly (more expensive), others not so much. It depends on the power supply design how well it handles various "sine wave" (or not) power.

Way past my KSA's so I will assume, say a Computer vs a Drill?
Thanks,

Nah, re power supplies, more like a battery drill v. a 120 wired drill. Bit of a torque difference there...

After three years of dealing with power drop-outs ,The Friday before last I bought a UPS.
Not knowing and not really wanting to check the power usage of everything in my office I bought a Cyber Power 1500V UPS with an output of 900watts Sine Wave output.
After charging the batteries 8 hours I connected my computer and all peripherals except my printer which I will do later. The I downloaded and installed the monitoring software.
SO far the "Power Panel" shows my max. draw at 230 watts with the backup drives running but not recording.

Connected :Not all are connected to the battery power, just the surge protection
27" iMac
27" Apple Thunderbolt Monitor
4: 2tb hard drives ( when backing up")
1: Satelite Modem
1: Phone signal booster
1: External CD/DVD
I don't know if the Sine wave feature is necessary or not but it only cost $20 more, and years ago my G5 Power Mac would not run on my generator ( modified sine wave).
After three years of dealing with power drop-outs ... (show quote)

I run a UPS for my home office computer, printers, and internet and another inexpensive one to cover the 15 - 20 seconds it takes for the generator to cycle up to full power.

Really I need a backup generator but I can't afford one that will run the furnace 14.7kw plus what I would need for the rest of the house
looking at 20 - 30 kw

Your furnace takes 14.7 KW?

Electric furnace?

Sounds high for a burner and blower/pump

We have an oil fired hot air furnace and water heater and can run them and most of the rest of the house on a 6KW generator. And it’s a big house.

Yep total electric except for the Kitchen range.

Wood pellet stove for heat backup might be cheaper than a full electric generator.

If your printer is a large laser printer then disconnect everything else before you try it. Laser printers suck a huge amount of power on startup so although it may work on standby the first print will quite likely be enough to shut everything off. I have a large colour laser on 230v from a 30A circuit (the feed to the laser is only through a 10A cable). Starting up for a print the lights dim momentarily. The startup current is often enough to trigger an overload on the UPS. So, depending on the printer, do not be surprised if the printer won't run from the UPS.

Yes, they are essential. The other day, we had a blip in service. The two computers and the TV kept running.

Nice to know I'm not the only one who for years has his recliner plugged into a UPS.
Electric, not manual.
I thought about that one day when I was reclined.
What would I do if the power went out!!!
I knew it would be extremely difficult if not impossible to get out of the chair.
Easy, UPS.
They do sell a few recliners with a battery backup incorporated into the recliner. Not many.

That happened to me the other day. The chair wouldn't go down while I was watching TV. The power had gone out, but it didn't affect the TV. Then I heard the UPS beeping. I thought the chair was plugged into a UPS, but it wasn't. Now it is.

e).

Does the software that's used to shut down the computer, keep the computer from going to sleep? I tried the APC Power Chute software several years ago and it deactivated the sleep function. APC said they couldn't shut down the computer if it was in sleep mode.
